But for the V22... The opposition was... Strong on derp and weak on fact and common sense or logic... Nothing belong less in the air than helicopters... Not much reason to oppose more the V22 than CH53 or Chinooks. Did the marines have AV8B's in Japan ? That stuff was even more an aberration...

I will say this for the Osprey. They are a LOT quieter than some of the other things flying overhead. I suppose that's all well and good until one crashes through the living room though.

Yes, that is just it. I've said it before, and will harp on it again now. Noise is not the issue with US bases here. Nothing does more disservice to the anti-base movement that to use the noise issue as a talking point. Visiting dignitaries from Tokyo and Washington come to visit, and in five minutes they hear more straight-pipe scooters, constant construction both road and building demo and erecting, sound-trucks for everything from a constant election cycle to mobile libraries to yaki-imo vendors to pro-wrassling announcements to recycle shop places (still missing some of them), community jichikai announcements that could easily drown out rock concerts, to a serious bosozoku problem, to hot-rodders desperate to be seen and heard living out kinda sorta fast but oh-so-furious fantasies, police helicopters, coast guard choppers, medevac helos, and on and on....arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! They go back with utter certainty that noise is total bullshit, and disdain for the movement. There are legitimate issues, but by parading these ludicrous claims front and center, they are easily and rightly dismissed. US bases are oases of peace and tranquility in the middle of utter mayhem all around. Love visiting with friends. Not that they stand for peace and tranquility as an aggressive military force, but the point stands.

Yes, the complaint before the Osprey came was they are so very, very dangerous. Now, they regularly have a spot on the local news with some little old man provided a decibel meter by the prefecture logging days and times of the occasional flyover of his home and just how noisy it was. Great filler on those slow news days. They are quieter than the flying school buses they replaced, but stealth aircraft they are not. They do however take nights and weekends off, something the bosozoku, jichikai, and other sources of noise pollution do not.

Well, technically, that's how you build a case for noise disturbances issues. Mostly when they are unjustified, preventable or the result from illegal activities/modification of vehicles. But int the case of an airport, it's already a bit more ridiculous... in case of military installation that borders on lunacy...
