Why don’t young people in Japan like eating traditional New Year’s dishes?

More and more young people born and raised in Japan are deciding they can do without osechi at New Year’s, and they’ve actually got some pretty sound reasons...more...

I remember when I first moved to Japan being told by a number of locals I MUST try osechi ryori. However, whenever I asked if it was any good no one said it was. The best answer I got was, "Not really."

I actually like it. But then again, I have become immune to natto too. Maybe my taste buds have worn out in my old age.

I'm sure the Colonel is rubbing his greasy hands together to move in on this trend. I mean why not expand the "Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii" to New Years too... Marketing genius I tell ya.

I'm going to store 3 days worth of cheezeburgers for new year... Might make me look less like a desperate loser than lining up starving the second of january for the reopening of my local McD ...

If I die, you can have my stuff. But I want to be buried my my Yua Aida DVD collection... And the photobooks too... Not sure they have good fapping material where I'm going, and dun't get me started on the 72 virgins...

I'm pretty tolerant food wise but osechi ryori is depressing shit that makes me glad that I get deployed on foreign projects at that time of the year.

Osechi can be great or it can be shite, because there's really no concrete definition of what it is (other than it's food that won't go bad over the new year holidays when businesses are closed). There are huge regional differences in the "traditional" content too. So osechi in Kyushu is likely to be very different from osechi in Aomori, for example.

TOKYO (TR) – Education officials in Tachikawa City revealed on Sunday that over 940 students and teachers suffered food-poisoning symptoms last week, with the outbreak likely being due to the eating of tainted school lunches.

“Nori” dried laver seaweed like this is being blamed for food poisoning outbreaks at schools in Tachikawa, western Tokyo, as well as Gobo and Hidakagawa, both of which are in Wakayama Prefecture. The product is made in Osaka’s Miyakojima Ward. Photo was taken Feb. 28. (Kae Terao)

Another outbreak occurred in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, in January due to nori provided by the same maker as in the Tachikawa case.

The seaweed in the Tachikawa case was used as a topping for a bowl of rice covered with a mixture of chicken and eggs.

A study by the metropolitan government’s food surveillance department showed that the virus gene type detected from the packaged nori matched that from the sampled stools of victims.

the supply center of school meals is built just a few years ago and managed by tachikawa city which is my neighborhood.

the dotard, who is the head of the one-man nori processor produced the infected nori, confessed he did work with empty hands while breaking the agreement that processing nori with empty hands is banned in spite of the fact that he knew had infected norovirus at that time.

ive never heard until now that dry nori become a cause of virus infection....
