YT not working suddenly

Postby Russell » Tue Dec 02, 2014 7:46 am

OK, for some strange reason Youtubes do not display on FG anymore, while directly going to Youtube poses no problem.

I get a message to install Flash Player, which is already installed.

Did something change last night?

The youtubers are working just fine for me on both my OS10.10.1 and Win8.1 machines.

Sometimes a "message to install Flash Player, which is already installed" means that flash has been turned off by a plug-in, which commonly occurs if you running a bunch of ad-blocking plug-ins / extensions.
Go to menu ≡ > addons > plugins - the system might have disabled the shockwave flash plug-in.

Big hint: Some malware/virus turn off flash in an attempt to trick you going to their fake flash plug-in site: Never just click of an "Install Flash Player" message, but rather type in the Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player site get.adobe.com/flashplayer/‎ by yourself.

Yes, I found out it is not a problem with FG.

Probably related to my Symantec virus checker.

Can't even reinstall Flash anymore...

You really can't blame your virus checker. Flash is so poorly written that it has most of the same characteristics as a virus/malware.

Speaking of which, is it too much effort for an octopus to get the youtube links here to run in html5 instead of flash? I'm guessing the answer is yes, but always worth asking the question.

Does Youtube provide some sort of embedding code for HTML5? Or better, something that works according to user preference? Not sure if HTML5 will work for everyone (last time I tried it I had issues with it forgetting the mute setting, and couldn't be arsed to faff about with it).

I'm not deep enough into all this to know what is necessary on the phpBB side, but http://www.youtube.com/html5 youtube are supporting html5. Other sites (e.g. http://www.b3ta.com/links/popular) embed as html5 for me, once I have told youtube my preference by that link, but FG embeds as flash. On flash heavy pages, like the youtube of interest thread, I am getting occasional instability from flash crashing. I suspect this comes from the last flash update, and will be sorted out in the next patch which will likely come by in a couple of weeks.

And yes, I agree that allowing users to set their preferences for flash or html5 is both desirable, and I suspect necessary, and would be done through that youtube link. To state my question more clearly, I am asking whether the requirement to use flash, even though an individual user has set html5 as default with youtube, can be removed.

That's a good question, if someone wants to look into it and post a PHPBB-friendly solution, I can easily add it in. Otherwise it will have to wait until the round-tuits next arrive.

Challenge accepted. Might this be your solution? https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2247756
(Admittedly that thread does not inspire 100% confidence)

Looks plausible, will give it a whirl. (Note: it might not work on existing links unless I run the PHPBB reparse script, which is a PITA to work with).

I mostly run a flash blocker and the youtube stuff embedded in FG shows up as HTML5 for me and run fine. But with the blocker off, they show up as flash here despite the youtube preferences being for HTML5.

OK, that's the new, playback-method-neutral embed code, which is showing up as Flash for me.

Now I just have to work out where to change the preferences in the YT account associated with this browser to see if it works with HTML5, though if someone else could confirm, that would also be froodily wonderfulsome.

Aha, go here: https://www.youtube.com/html5 and click on "Request the HTML5 player".

Seems to be working :)

Confirmed. I'm in love with a tentacle.
With the added benefit that the screen sizes are bigger too!

Holy cow, Yanpa, I uninstalled Flash and I did not install an html5-compatible YT player, but it still works here!

Thanks a lot!

Thank wagyl for the detective work, I was merely the implementing instrument.

I see my earlier problem with HTML5 not remembering my volume preferences seems to have gone away.

It is possibly a result of using the [yt] tags rather than [youtube] tags, but viewtopic.php?f=43&p=357790#p357790 is reverting to flash too. Since last month, I have set my browser to require confirmation before flash will run. It is a real eyeopener as to how many sites use flash for easy bling which includes essential navigation links which they don't have as text as well. But that is irrelevant here.

Three possible solutions:
1. Do a similar tweak as was done for [youtube]
2. Convert [yt] to [youtube], or
3. Suck it up, bitches. (It is, admittedly, a rare problem)

The OctopusOfDoom will crack open a new box of roundtuits as soon as they arrive, assuming he's remembered to order them.
