Useful fatigue measure sought in land of 'karoshi'OSAKA, Nov. 25, Kyodo - Dead tired? Dog tired? How tired are you? A massive collaboration among Japanese industry, government and academia wants to find out, turn fatigue measurement into an exact science and perhaps make exhaustion a thing of the past.... Researchers hope to mobilize volunteers to undergo repeated mental and physical load experiments during a three-day period to track markers and develop a weariness measurement system....they will examine substances such as caffeine, taurine and ascorbic acid for use in anti-fatigue ingredients. In the second phase...they will conduct clinical tests to verify fatigue control and fatigue recovery.

Hey, I've never been one to complain about better living through chemicals but they might want to try sleeping. It works great.

Why don't they just legalize cocaine and sell it in vending machines?

It'll keep you up day and night, you'll eat less, and you'll feel like you are loaded with energy. I've seen a few coke heads before and you'd think they were farking Energy Bandits or something.. they are figity, wide awake, and go non-stop...

Truckers, and their ilk are notoriously known for toting up on some coke to keep them awake and alert for long durations.

They did! :P

Crystal Meth was invented by the Japanese 1909 and it was given to most factory workers and many soldiers during WWII. Since the war the Govn't has had a hell of time taking the Meth back.

Isn't Japan already the biggest consumer of coffee?
I find coffee doesn't make me less tired. If I drink enough, I probably won't be able to sleep, but I'll just be super irritable and irritated instead
One or two strong coffees are an incredible high, however :spin:

Do they offer Jolt in Japan? I know back in the day, 3 jolts, and you were good for 36 hours.. with a few capuccinos to tide you over.
:D

So is J-meth more potent? I know shrooms were legal until a short while ago :D Oh the dancing pink cows on the pogo sticks.

Now what will I ever talk about with my Japanese co-workers?

Every morning its the same "I'm tired" conversation where we compete to see whose the worst off....
Can't say "otsukaresama desu" any more.... it has to be "Ogenkisama desu"

But really, how mush of this "I'm tired" stuff is just psychosematic? I work in a Japanese company, and I get away with being a slackarse....

I have heard that it wasn't outlawed until after the war because nobody here really smoked it enough to be a big problem.

I have also heard that until it was officially banned by the Occupation forces, there were some very *happy* GIs in the know.

Informed Use of Natural Resources? Not anymore...

Could staying up until 2am and then getting up to go to work at 7am have anything to do with it? Does anyone else find that Japanese people just don't know when to go to sleep?

There's a salaryman down the road from me who gets up every night in winter, goes outside and walks around shouting.

He shouts something like "Hinoyojin".

Sometimes I hear that voice during the day in the office. Do you think I need help?

I would like to see a wristwatch sized device that would give you a color-coded EKG readout like in Resident Evil 2 and 3. Green for great health, orange for something minor like a cold, yellow for serious illnesses, red for life-threatening conditions, and black for death. That way I could know how I'm doing instead of sleeping when I'm tired like normal people.

The solution to Japan's woes: a 7 hour workday.

It is indeed part of the fabric - the "tired" competition. And given that the majority of people go out of their way to put themselves in a situation of suffering/sleepiness I just can't even come close to understanding it.

I do offer a few nods of sympathy here and there at the office, but I can't really get involved; it is all just so hopeless. Logic (as in, "just go home and go to sleep, dumbass") doesn't register where there is "work" that needs to be pretended.

Women work the system the best. OLs talk nonstop about lack of sleep at the office (seemingly a job requirement) but are able to leave around 6PM. The salarymen have to stay on for hours past that until their boss/bucho decides he wants to finally darken his family's doorway sometime after the last train. Usually computer solitaire and bottles of rye are used to pass the time until that point. Tiring, ne?

The strict repitition of the process/insanity each day might indeed be the strangest part.

I'd only ever stick around work longer than normal if I really had to.

What annoys me the most, is that everyone knows this charade goes on, but nobody brings it to the fore. Every month, I have to report how many hours of overtime I did that month.... it's as if its some kind of twisted masochistic competition - like TV champions. Nobody mentions it, nobody deals with it. Management can't give a rats ass if people stay at work and do fuck all.

The Japanese are masters at putting on appearances.... and for what? What's even more stupid is that nobody's forcing them to stay and work longer... but they just do it anyway out of fear of..... well,.... *something*.
