Being a waygookin teacher at a hagwon may suck but it's good to be the king.

In South Korea, Cha Kil-young sings with famous actresses, works out of an office in Seoul's exclusive Gangnam district, endorses brain-boosting drinks, and takes home an $8 million paycheck—all in the name of teaching math to high schoolers.

Cha runs an online "cram school"—a hagwon—that helps students prepare for South Korea's version of the SAT.

[...]

Cha isn't an average teacher, even by Korean standards. Regular school teachers in South Korea generally max out at just above $80,000 a year by the end of their career, according to data from the Center on International Education Benchmarking. Granted, that's $30,000 more than the OECD average, and South Korean teachers generally spend fewer hours in the classroom than teachers in almost all other developed countries.

No, no you've got it wrong. Waygookin is the Korean reading of 外国人. Gook/guk is 国 in Korean. Some Koreans have told me that the term "gook" originated with Koreans saying Migook (美国) the Korean word for America during the Korean war to US soldiers who got confused and thought they were saying, "Me gook." Kind of like, "Me Tarzan. You Jane."

Haven't you ever heard them chanting Dae Han Min Gook (大韓民国) at soccer games?

Seoul to deport American over positive N. Korea comments

A Korean-American woman accused of praising rival North Korea in a recent lecture said she is being deported Saturday from South Korea, in the latest in a series of cases that critics say infringe on the country's freedom of speech.

The Korea Immigration Service decided to deport Shin Eun-mi, a California resident, after prosecutors determined that her comments violated South Korea's National Security Law, agency official Kim Du-yeol said.

She praised the taste of North Korean beer and the cleanliness of North Korea's rivers.

She should also have praised Best Korea for its suitability for Astronomical observations due to the lack of light pollution...

I want you to give yourself a good spanking for even thinking I would attend a soccer game that had more than an incidental smattering of Koreans in attendance. Any national Korean team game would certainly fall afoul of my Boycott Korea! hobby.

Thanks for the explanation, though. I knew about Me Gook one, but not the waygookyjin. chotto kawaii yan yan

MOSCOW, Idaho - As triple homicide suspect John Lee made his first court appearance in Whitman County Monday afternoon for eluding charges, KHQ was learning more and more about the man accused of killing three people, and critically injuring another.

.....

One of the victims in the shooting spree was Lee's mother Terri Grzebielski. A neighbor of Grzebielski told KHQ Terri was proud of her sons. 76-year-old David Trail, 47-year-old Belinda Niebuhr, and Grzebielski were the three people killed in the shootings. The fourth person, Michael Chin, was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. As of Monday morning, KHQ's Victor Correa confirmed Chin in no longer in the ICU.

Watch Dogs Rescued From a Dog Meat Farm Get New Shot at Life
Twenty-three dogs that were destined for dinner plates in South Korea got a second chance at life this week. Rescued from a dog meat farm outside Seoul late last year, 11 of the canines arrived at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria in Virginia on Monday, a first step on their journey to adoption. The remaining 12 dogs are also scheduled to arrive this week.

The group Humane Society International arranged the rescue by working with a South Korean farmer to stop his participation in the dog meat trade. The man agreed to grow crops as a more humane way of making a living, according to the group.

"It's estimated that 1.2 to 2 million dogs are consumed annually in Korea," said Kelly O'Meara, director for Humane Society International's companion animal-related international projects. The Humane Society focuses on eliminating cruel practices in the dog meat trade, she said. Animals on these farms typically live in overcrowded cages that are exposed to the elements and receive very little care or food, O'Meara added.

The newly arrived dogs will spend about a week being monitored for signs of illness or distress and given necessary care, said Megan Webb, executive director of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

"We will need to limit their stimulation and get them accustomed to being in this new environment," she said.

Once staff members feel that the dogs are ready for adoption, five animal shelters in the region—in addition to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria—will help place the animals in good homes.

I tried dog once on my first trip to Seoul in 1999. It was a chige with lots of sesame oil and kimchee so I couldn't really taste the dog. I remember at the time thinking it just tasted like spicy sesame oil. The meat was really soft though. Even though I went out of my way to try it and was all in once I started eating it psychology kicked in and it weirded me out too much to enjoy it. I think I'd have had a lot more trouble eating it in some place like Vietnam where is comes on a plate like a chicken so you actually recognize which part you're eating.

I once ate dog, unwittingly, in a Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands.

I know, because my body felt hot afterwards.

And the restaurant was closed a year later when the authorities discovered what was on the menu...

I get that people are raised in a culture where dogs are pets and never food so they don't want to eat them and they feel a little said when they think about people in other cultures eating them. However, I will never understand the moral outrage over eating one kind of animal while you're fine with stuffing bacon and steak down your throat (except of course in cases where that species is threatened or endangered).

Oh, don't get me wrong. The idea of eating either Lucky or Buttons grosses me right out. As my bacon habits gross out my friends Benyamin and Ismail. As does their goat-ish tendencies to me. And don't get me started on Gefelte fish. But I am not starting a Goat Refuge or a Fish Sanctuary, nor am I even commenting on their heathen diets. And much more cogently, even were I a vegetable head I would recognise that my personal dietary foibles do not give me a soapbox from which to comment on the meat choices of other societies because my own society eats so much meat that next year's hamburger crop is itself a big farty climate problem.

If the dogs are in pain or suffering, kill them softly; using scarce economic resources to rescue a bunch of mangy mutts is beyond obscenity, as is their sanctimonious imperialism in persuading the dog husbander to change his crop. These people are genuine evil masquerading as saints. Nope, white peoples is definitely the worstest peoples I knows. And when I say white peoples, I only mean the fucking English and Anglo-Americans. It makes me want to go out and brain spear a dolphin or 2.

Dog isn't very widely eaten there anymore (if it ever was). Since the '88 Seoul Olympics dog restaurant have been officially banned thanks to nosy white people and basically only operate in backstreets with no English sings or menus. It's mainly seen as old man food since like most weird cuisine in Asia they think it has magical medicinal properties like keeping you cool in summer and making your dick hard. I doubt many younger Korean women have eaten it and most of the younger guys won't cop to it unless you're pretty good friends with them.

So, pretty much the Dolphin or whale meat of Koorea.............sounds about right. I still tell hysterical looking middle aged fat white cat ladies that the Japanese still eat whale meat at school lunches but I haven't met many under 40 that have ever even tasted it.

I think the Koreans Eat Dog thing is mostly the same sort of pandahugger hysteria. Having heard it has happened, it morphs into They Do! They REALLY DO!!!!!!!!!!!! I find the very idea more revolting than eating warm blooded fishies, but its hardly much of a leap to imagine somebody might eat Rin Tin Tin. I mean, look at those haunches..........and they are mercury free.

Isn't Chow slang for food because of the Chinese meat dog, or is that another apocryphalia?

Wrong on most counts here. Dog meat is still favoured by many males in Korea and yes, the often wimpy, narcissistic mirror-watching, handbag carrying younger male generations also eat dog at least a few times a year.

Middle aged men and upwards still subscribe to the 'stamina' nonsensical argument (I guess all the prostitutes a lot of Korean men still go to when married have various nasties that make their customers' dicks droop) while the younger generation of males are surprisingly jingoistic in their nationalism and will often argue in class to foreign teachers that it is 'our culture and therefore we should keep eating dog'.

Backstreets? Dog meat restaurants exist openly in Korea. The last time I worked in Korea I lived in a nice area and close to my apartment was a dog meat restaurant. It was also close to my work building that housed nice cafes and other restaurants.

There are very open meat markets in all parts of Korea and you can get to see some of the ways in which the workers there kill dogs. Even if you don't see it, you will hear it. Just like people, animals (including dogs of course) suffer when pain is inflicted on them and one of the ways in which they are tortured is by burning. The intensity of the dogs' suffering is supposed to release chemicals that make the meat better.

Don't give me the old 'It doesn't happen in Korea anymore'. It does. The authorities mostly don't give a rat's piss about animal torture unless some foreigner finds out about it and in that case it harms Korea's image. If different levels of government in Korea such as the local authorities of where the meat markets are situated actually had inspections and made local ordenances governing what goes on in the meat market, then Koreans would have some justification for whingeing how foreigners 'don't understand our special way of life' etc.

The lack of animal welfare groups, the lack of 'anti-cruelty to animal' laws, and the dreadful spectacle of how many animals are treated in Korea as if it is normal to throw rocks at ducks swimming in rivers while the well dressed father looks on and smiles at his shit of a son doing it and other Koreans look on implacably, as if it is normal to see so many abandoned dogs rooting through garbage on the streets (Jeollanam Province in the southwest is one example), the abuse of stray cats and dogs etc are all part of the same problem as the cruelty of the dog meat trade.

In one of the southwestern cities I am familiar with, males would drive around picking up stray dogs off the street to take to the meat markets. They would also try and catch people's pets that happened to be wandering around. All the hypocrisy about 'special breeds' only being used is just that.

There are certain breeds traditionally bred in special farms but again Korean laws and authorities don't give a rat's about collie dogs or spaniels ending up in meat markets as has happened. There are also do it yourself dog 'farms' to be seen in various parts of Korea where cunts keep dogs in cages in a yard and the cages are so confining that the dogs literally cannot move. They are there in the rain and under the sun until the cruel cunt sells them to a meat market. It's a sick sight to behold.

The bad publicity for Korea when non Koreans see (and hear) all these things is warranted and has actually helped publicise the reality of the dog meat industry to Koreans who were told at school and in the media that dog eating is Korean culture and how dare anybody criticise it.

Interesting. Allowing that there is nothing inherently wrong with eating dog it would be nice to have less of that characteristic deadpan Korean savagery involved. Raise them on a farm and make sure the slaughter blade is sharp and ready.

Crikey, I know people that happily eat Wabbitz. DEYZ WABBITZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Weev dem wabbitz awone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I have heard it's nice, but I just can't eat Bugs Bunny. The only edible wabbit I can think of is the one in the Bugs Bunny cartoons that speeds around the greyhound track as he chases her with a wabbit boner. And she's made of tin

I don't remember but apparently my parents fed me rabbit as a kid and just told me it was chicken so I wouldn't feel bad about eating the Easter Bunny. The ruse worked. I haven't had a chance to try it since but wouldn't hesitate. Game meats are really hit or miss though. If they're prepared by someone who knows what they're doing, they can be really excellent. Otherwise they taste, well, gamy.
