Yoga, Petting Puppies, Halloween: Banned By Malaysia's Muslim Clerics

...
as Malaysia modernizes, its state-backed religious authorities are embarking on a spree of fatwas. Each is a decree based on interpretations of the Quran. The fatwas are typically seen as guidelines, but police can potentially enforce them under Malaysia's Sharia laws...
...
Wagyu beef -- Originating in Japan, this legendarily succulent form of beef is sometimes produced by massaging cows. These lucky cows are also occasionally fed beer and therefore forbidden.

Hmm, I am inclined to believe that feeding alcohol to animals could be considered to be an act of animal cruelty, in which case the fatwa would IMHO be justified, or at least make some sense. Haven't dug into the question, though.

Feeding a 600kg Wagyu cow a 0.66L bottle of beer (瓶ビール) would have less effect than giving a 10 year old child a quarter glass of cider.
Besides, cows like it——They always try to sneak into my orchards in the late fall to the eat the cider-y windfall apples.

But is it good for them? Lots of things that are OK for humans is poison for some animals. And the digestion system of cows is very different from ours.

Edit: The Googlewebs tell all sorts of stories:

This one says
...Dairy farmers noticed that if the silage had a strange odour, the cows tended also to have production problems. After calving, the cows failed to thrive, they were more likely to be ill and their milk production fell. On the background of around 200 silage samples from around the country, it turns out that the silage with the bad odour was characterised by having a high propanol content....

And this gibberish suggests
...The postpartum transition dairy cow has sufficient metabolic capacity to cope with high dietary concentrations of primary alcohols even when alcohol intake is abruptly increased at the day of calving...

Safer to trust the fatwa, methinx. And I read that the French feed their cows wine
