JR East says fuck convenience

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sat Jan 17, 2015 2:31 pm

According to this article (Japanese) the assholes at JR East Japan have decided to end food and beverage service on certain shinkansen and express routes in an effort to boost sales for in-station vendors starting March 13. It'll apply to the following lines: Tohoku Shinkansen Nasuno (Tokyo - Koriyama), Joetsu Shinkansen Tanigawa (Tokyo - Echigo Yuzawa), Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa (Yamagata - Shinjo), Fresh Hitachi (Ueno - Iwaki), and Narita Express.

Derp derp, boost sales for in station vendors? Don't they already sell completely different bento boxes?

I never buy from the robot cart girls on the trains unless I don't have time to buy something ahead of time...but in those cases, it's nice to not go without anything.

I forgot to add that they're doing it on some of the Green Car routes too.

Sounds more like they're trying to cost cut by reducing staff rather then "boost sales."

Sun of a Japanese prinsesss, Coligny is wright!

I think the vending machines only have drinks. The robot cart lemurs are usually packing some sandwiches and ice cream.

The article suggests that the reasons are because of reduced sales on board, due to better range available in platform kiosks etc., rather than as a strategy to improve sales at station kiosks. Trains running longer than two hours will still have the service. I mean, if you were running a train for more than two hours, refreshments would be handy.

So it does. I should stop trying to multitask while pretending I can read Japanese.
