Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi’s vagina kayak is considered obscene,
but an annual penis festival is a family event. What’s the deal?Artist Megumi Igarashi—known in her home country of Japan as Rokudenashiko ("the good for nothing girl")—is currently awaiting trial for obscenity charges related to selling a 3-D model of her vagina. Yet, Japan is home to a yearly festival that, almost literally, worships the penis.

More PR for Japan's great international image! Hilarious that most Japanese still don't understand why all the tourists here are giggling every time they see bukkake rice on the menu.
The claim it's about the vagina and keeping women down is bullshit. They can show the vagina in ukiyoe because it's traditional. Same with those penis festivals. And since when is it easy to see vagina in conbini porn? I agree that the laws are confusing and not always consistently enforced leading to confusion. I've noticed that some Hollywood movies released here in recent years show penis and bush while others blur them out. However, I guess that's a decision made by the local distributors and not government censors and some are being more conservative than others due to that confusion.
