Some J-pol was saying "we have asked that the US do not fly that type of helicopter until the issue is fully explained and resolved." Found myself yelling at the TV: "And how about not restarting any nuclear reactors until that issue is fully resolved!!" Double standards abound.

No, if it's an HH60 it's not even old by any realistic standards... And not in the same category as the V22

Think:
HH60: Chevrolet Suburban
CH46: U-Haul box delivery truck

Two men die at immigration center
Japan Times / AFP-JIJI / March 31, 2014
Two detainees at an immigration center in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, died over the weekend, an official said Monday, just months after the death of another man at the same facility.
On Friday an Iranian man in his 30s choked on his dinner and was taken to a nearby hospital, but he died Saturday afternoon, a spokeswoman at the immigration center said.
Sunday morning a Cameroonian man in his 40s was found unconscious in his cell, she said.

Two (still unnamed) gaijin were killed after they got caught in a snow slide after going off piste at the Ryuo Ski Park in Nagano this afternoon.

So far, all I could get online was this:

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20150118/k10014771971000.html

There should be a lot of fresh, unstable snow from the blizzard the previous day, and a nice sunny day today. It would have been very tempting conditions, for someone who can't read the danger signs. Or they could just be unlucky.

Well put. Lots of Argentinians ski, some rather nicely. They have these little mountains there, you see, named after a famous if overpriced American outdoor clothing company.......
As Wagyl put it, these ones got seduced by the soft white fluff that is neither nice nor soft, nor forgiving when it moves. All too common a story where I am from.

RIP.

What is more, the Argentinians who know what a snow ski is, have more than enough money to travel to the far side of the globe.

I think I know where this accident took place. I retract my comment that they may have been unlucky. You'd be a little bit foolish to venture in there. Someone had been watching a few too many X-treme ski DVDs.

:keyboardcoffee: Sadly, No. It's the Land's End Range, silly

There probably is a Finisterre somewhere in southern Argentina, actually

Wagyl,
A double yes to the Rich Argie factor. Some of them are loaded, and their money is in USD anyways. They actually have a very nice style when they're good. A mix between Austrian Wedeln sweep and the more angular American style. Nice to watch. At any rate, certainly here in Beautiful Red Bullish Columbia 'Unlucky' has become a pat euphemism for stupid. Some really are Michael Schumacher unfortunate, but most are just too big for their intermediate boots. The effect of the media on the deeply stupid or delusionally confident is really quite remarkable. At any rate, they tooks their chances, they paid full fare. As a mountain cat who has enjoyed 12 lives all I can say is:

RIP.

I don't speak no Bosnian, but that is definitely my favourite place name. Land's End is cool, but not as mysterious or gothic.

I wonder how many Finisterre's there are? I shall get Wagyl on it

PS ediT: LMGTFY = only 3 places that count. Spain, Frankland and New Hampshire, which I thought was landlocked!
I discount the Papuan one because that's a mountain range and imperialist derivative. Sadly, the Fnisterre I remember from Newfoundland geography class is actually a Lands End. Or a Land's End. Maybe we wuz using a French map1!!?/?????

EDIT: I just read that it was 2 Argies that got bargied, while their 2 antipodean companions were spared. The 2 argies were old enough to know better, so you kids play safe out there and don't think that watching an extreme ski video makes you good enough to pull a Prince Charles.

Dennis Williams - suicide in Dec. 2013

Postby BigInJapan » Sun Jan 25, 2015 4:43 pm

A stranger e-mailed saying he planned to kill himself. What was I supposed to do?

Dennis Williams, an American living in Japan, sent a suicide note to a handful of writers he didn’t know personally. Several tried to help.

By: Cynthia McCabe The Washington Post, Published on Sun Jan 16 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Dec. 10, 2013, an American expat in Japan emailed a suicide note to a handful of writers, many of them Washington Post reporters.

Under the subject line “Saving a Legacy,” the 66-year-old English teacher and unknown writer named Dennis Williams composed a chilling piece of fan mail.
“This is my last day on this earth. I’m contacting you because of a Washington Post article of yours that left an impression on me . . . I am taking my life not out of despair but simply because I’ve said everything I wanted to say and consider my work finished. Since no one at present (or in the past half-century) is interested, I have no platform upon which to stand and talk about my work. In this regard, I believe I have an immense amount to give, not only from my mind but from my heart, and there are just no takers.”

* * *

Days passed before I learned that the best hadn’t happened.

It was Williams’ niece whom I had reached out to on Facebook. In a message eight days later, she thanked me for letting her know about the email Williams sent. Her uncle, she said, had in fact killed himself by jumping off a building in the hours after emailing us.

How lovely for Dennis' wife and any family he left behind. I feel more sorry for the journalists subjected to this emotional blackmail. People who commit suicide are not always lost souls who need our sympathy. Some of them are incredibly selfish in attempting to make others feel responsible for their inability to cope with the choices they've made or refusal to deal with life as it is rather than what they want it to be.

I can't feel too sorry for this bloke. He was 66 years old but stuck in that whole adolescent/early 20s narcissism that most of us leave behind. McTojo is a good example of that kind of person in their 30s. So Dennis was a writer? So are many of us but we're not going to kill ourselves because the world hasn't recognised us.

Actually it has never been easier for somebody who writes to self-publish and garner attention because of the internet. A genuinely good and well publicised blog will bring your work to people who have never met you. Print runs are the cheapest they've ever been. If you're not prepared to invest some of your money and publish your own stuff then you're not going to make a real writer's impact.

It makes me laugh how in Oz there are so many self styled 'artists' and 'writers' who automatically assume that taxpayers must subsidise them through government handouts. Often the end product is self indulgent garbage published only because the 'writers' have connections and grab the free money that way.

Sadly Dennis Williams seems a case of somebody who just never grew up. I would expect a much younger person to do what he did in sending what were emotionally blackmailing messages to people he'd never met so he could gain the attention he thought his work warranted. He had been in Japan for some time and with the extra opportunities offered by a spousal visa, so why the hell didn't he start his own publishing imprint or something? Immaturity seems the issue here, sorry.
