Why do u guys like Google so much?

Postby AssKissinger » Wed Dec 03, 2003 9:04 am

Yahoo has a huge search engine. Yahoo has image search. Yahoo has pop-up blocker. Yahoo provides email which gets way less spam that Hotmail. Yahoo has a news service that includes Reuters and A.P. Yahoo has games. Yahoo has a radio station thing (that used to be cool before you had to pay for high-speed sound). So what is it about Google? It's always Google search this and that. GIS and so on.

BTW, I hate MSN and Hotmail and that crap. Always a pain signing in, spam out the wazoo, and for me it always cuts my Internet off.

Google is awesome simply because it doesn't bother with all that crap. It's a search engine first and foremost, and it gets results.

Simple and effective...

Google also has news and it is a very excellent collection of breaking stories in a variety of topics and variety of sources. It has an image search. It has bargain shopping search (froogle). It has catalogs, language translators, the answers thing where you can ask a question and say how much you'll pay to have it answered, etc. Why they don't promote these things more is a mystery. But here they all are:

btw, yahoo's web search results are still powered by google.

Yahoo's web search results are still powered by google. but that'll change soon.

Death Before Birth - The Life Cycle of a Search Engine
, isedb.com / 12-02-2003
....Google gained large distribution when Yahoo switched to it to drive down Inktomi stock price, only later to buy Inktomi at $1.65 a share. Google then came to power stealing traffic from Yahoo by providing clean, relevant results, and good search tools for surfers and webmasters alike....

Microsoft is still working on its search engine. Yahoo recently acquired Overture and is working behind closed doors in much the same way as MSN is. LookSmart has not updated Wise Nut in a long time, is hated by a large portion of the internet community, and is soon set to lose most of its distribution. And Ask Jeeves (owner of Teoma) has its top results powered by Google AdWords. With Google powering Yahoo, AOL and many other sites Google lacks a clear competitor today.

Google is the new face on the internet you see.

I remember back in the day when you had to try and place on search engines with keywords and a bazillion incarnations of the same page just to get in the first 1000 listings. Yahoo (back then) was completely random you might get placed and you might not.

Lycos started charging for high placement, there were sites devoted to listing on 20 or more search engines at once, it was a hassle. And if your client couldn't find his site from some obscure search engine he gave you grief. In short you could never find anything. Google changed everything and gave us back the net.

viva la google

Also the 'google' effect has decimated the 'domain name' game/business(which was such a rip off)

Who bothers typing in the exact domain name anymore when you can just hit google and search for what you want.

I don't look at the domain name anymore :)

BTW this is 'www.creative_dancing_to_famous_show_tunes.com' right ?

I just hope google remains independent of outside influence, like the supposed attempt by MS to acquire google.. now that would really blow!

I used to like Askgeeves.com, momma.com, and altavista.com. I still use altavista.com weekly for misc things.

Google is just that a damn fine browser. I love their beta news search. That is a great feature that many never even bother to use.

Even though I hate google I use it mainly for pictures for this form.
To see why google is bad go to http://www.google-watch.org/(I know I have said it before but google is the devil)

I have used some of thoes weird new ones that are supposed to have far more results than google but they are really slow. Google is good now because they can afford so much bandwidth.

I used to love hotbot before it got taken over by excite then lycos. hotbot was great at searching japanese pages for porn years ago. Now its the crappiest search engine ever. That is if you can even get the DNS to resolve.
