US boy, three, shoots both parents in New Mexico

A three-year-old American boy has shot his mother and father with the same bullet after pulling a gun from her handbag, police say.

The incident took place in a motel room on Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico.

The toddler was apparently reaching for an iPod.

The bullet passed through his father's buttock and hit his mother, who is eight months pregnant, in the arm. Both parents are said to be recovering.

The boy's two-year-old sister, who was also in the room at the America's Best Value Inn, was unhurt.

You are all missing the point. The only thing that can stop a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun. If that toddler's sister had been properly armed she would have taken out the bad toddler before he could shoot his parents. She would have taken him out the moment he put his hand in his mother's handbag. Tragedy averted.

The gun was her boyfriend's, and she was apparently unaware of it being stored under the driver's seat.

The 2-yo kid released his child seat belt, a skill he recently acquired, and got the gun when it moved from under her seat.

Yep, there should not have been a gun in the first place, but it is not as if the lady handed the gun over to the kid. Tragic accident.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is certainly no fun at all. In that case, sadness and RIP. Let's hope the authorities take a close look at the case and pursue charges against the responsible party, even if it is only a charge of illegal operation of a safety belt.

Toddlers have shot at least 23 people in the U.S. this year

Toddlers are shooting themselves or their parents at an accelerated rate this year, The Washington Post reports, and have shot at least 23 people this year alone.

The analysis says that in 2015, over the same period of time, young children were shooting people once a week, reporting 18 toddler-involved shootings.

In most cases, children have accidentally shot themselves, and in nine of the 18 reported shootings, the toddlers have died from their wounds.

At least seven shootings by 1, 2 and 3-year-olds were reported in April, the report found. The state of Georgia has reported the highest number of shootings in the country with eight since January 2015.

"Texas and Missouri are tied for second place with seven shootings each, while Florida and Michigan are tied for fourth, with six shootings apiece," according to WashPo.

Everytown For Gun Safety, the gun control advocacy group, has found 77 instances where children younger than 18-years-old has accidentally shot someone.

Congress has prevented studies from being conducted on how guns affect Americans, so reasons for why the uptick in toddler-involved shooting can really only be examined on a case-by-case basis.
