That report suggests that it would have gone through if not for the distraction of an election. It also gives proposed tax rates, so all other things being equal, for a 350 ml can, real beer should get about 22 yen cheaper, happoshu 6 yen dearer, and dai san beer 27 yen dearer. Since the tax rate will then be the same for all categories, and since a lot of these not-very-near-beers only exist because they can sell for cheaper because of the lesser tax impost, I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are discontinued.

A couple of years ago we sent one of the OL's out to buy beer for an office party. Not only did she come back with happoshu, but it was the diet variety. We don't delegate that task anymore.

One thing that's good about going to a gaijin party is everyone brings real beer except the occasional newb who doesn't realize that that thing in the can next to the beer that looks like beer isn't beer.

Except the ones run by shady bar owners down here, when all that's served is shite.

Lately the trend towards bringing Happoshu at Kyoto riverside furriner BBQs is shockingly strong, but I think it's mostly the married guys that also sit down to pee because so ordered. I certainly noticed that the only people that habitually bring Happoshu to those are Japanese; not all of them trade up when they grab one from the cooler but the ones that do are not small in number. As long as I don't get left drinking pseudo-beer I don't worry about it too much but it's so scuzzy in such a lame way I can't help but snort.

The only thing that really bugs me about the Happoshu mix is there is usually 1 or 2 plebs that loudly proclaim how those of us buying real beer have been suckered because Happoshu is just as good and cheaper, but it's not really the setting where I feel comfortable putting their sadsack prole asses where they belong. I get that everybody's just plain fucking tired and broke after 20 years of recession, but this Proudly Plebby Parsimony Propaganda thing is getting a bit much. Just admit you can't afford it. That takes real courage, and there's dignity in that.

The best is when someone's contribution is two cans of happoshu or chu-hi and they end up drinking half a case of beer.

I remember my first Japanese picnic (it was probably a hanami). I wanted to be extra generous so I brought a bottle of bourbon, a bunch of beer, and sandwiches I made with good bread from a bakery and imported salami and cheese. I probably spent about 8000 yen at a time when I really couldn't afford that since I was a student teaching English part-time. At the end I was told I owed a 3000 yen sanka-hi. Culture shock.

I didn't know what it was for the longest time. I tried just about all of em and decided the beer water wasn't for me.

I wouldn't blame a newb for accidentally buying margarine nowadays either. When "Butter taste" is the all over the package, I'm sure there are many J-people mindlessly grabbing a pack and being fooled.

Ouch. I never thought of that. I shall endeavour to alert any newbs I meet. Maybe we could just tatoo ビール on their palms. I was lucky they only came out with that piss when I could already read, but I have similar nightmarish memories about buying the wrong type of onigiri. I guess I just got lucky the first 5 times, but I thought they only came with salmon flakes. I thought wrong.

Reading good.

That's true, I never really knew WTF it was either at first. But it was so cheap I assumed it was, well, shit, so I bought beer. Then somebody asked me if I wanted a beer and handed me that piss instead. :puke:

6 of the Most Expensive Beers in the World

It’s easy to get lost in a sea of seasonals and special releases when wandering across the ever-expanding world of microbrews. Almost every brewery these days issues a special-edition batch that fetches a serious premium. Just how expensive can these limited production brews get? These six wallet-busters prove that beer can also be experienced on a Champagne budget.

1. Samuel Adams Utopias
Country of origin: United States
Style: American Strong Ale
ABV: 28%
Price: $150 for 750 ml ($ .20 per ml)

That article also has a tangential Japan connection:
6. Nail Brewing’s Antarctic Nail Ale

Country of origin: Australia
Style: Pale Ale
ABV: 10%
Price: $1,850 / 500 ml (highest winning bid at auction) ($3.70 per ml)

Nail Brewing’s Antarctic Nail Ale takes the expression “cracking open a cold one” to a whole new level. As the story goes, members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society brought melted ice from an Antarctic iceberg back to Perth, Australia, to be used in one of Nail Brewing’s limited edition brews. The result was a 30-bottle run of Antarctic Nail Ale. A beer you could feel good about drinking, 100% of the profits from an auction of this refreshing pale ale went to the Sea Shepherds to aid in protecting the world’s marine life.
(Shows how much of a wank all that Sea Shepherd stuff is)

Ummmmmmmmmm, am I missing something, like this purported feel good factor? I think I'll have a Budweiser.

For $1850, you can probably have more than one.

Yeeks. I read that as 1850 yen. :cry2:

I remember reading an article a while back about some newly enriched antipodean tech head talking about what a "blessing" Paul Watson was. The bile rose faster than the price at that auction could have. I blame Canada

Oh, ferschur. Doughnuts fer you. :-D

BTW, as a general note, I have been home a month now and the beer faggery is starting to make my brain hurt. This Hops thing has got to stop. My regular place replaced all their normal tap beer with hopfag juice, except for the Kronenbourg 1664, and that's French, which brings up the problem of faggery of a different sort. Christ, I just realised I've broken my Boycott France! Policy. Oh well, it was a good 19 years and 10 months.

No. I would only feed Tim's to people I don't like. My local Safeway makes scrumptious doughnuts; they have a real baker. Actually, Tim Horton's used to be pretty good. Then they pulled the ovens from all the shops and started distributing cold doughnuts from a remote factory. And their coffee has always been dishwater.

Hilarious Moose on the Loose video. Those things are so fecking stupid.

To be fair to Orewo Namero she has always looked like an anthropofied insectopod, but before she got scraggy she was almost cute at it.

Can she actually sing or was she just flavour of the month/dirty old producers's whore that got what she wanted in trade? I remember she was married to that ultra creepy lady man music producer (the soy basted Phil Spector); maybe still is.
