Image Princess Masako down with viral infectionGulf Daily News / Dec 4 TOKYO:
Japan's Crown Princess Masako has a viral infection and could be hospitalised.... with herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles - a viral infection of the nerve roots that typically results in pain and rash...She was currently resting at home and was being put on an intravenous drip three times a day. But she would be admitted to the hospital if her condition did not improve, the Imperial Household Agency said. Shingles - often induced by stress and fatigue....The popular princess has occasionally alluded to the pressures of royal life, at times facing media scrutiny ....

Shingles!!! It is a terrible disease.

Just for information.. Shingles

Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Herpes zoster, commonly called shingles, is an infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Only people who have had chicken pox can get shingles.

Any photos of what this looks like?

Are shingles regulated to the anus or buttock region, or are they a whole body type infection?

Shingles usually appears as a painful rash, typically on only one side of the body.

I know it says "one side" but what the hell does that mean?

Stress Blamed for Japan Princess' HealthKyodoSaturday January 10, 1:59 PM
Japanese Crown Princess Masako, who was hospitalized last month with a viral infection, said Saturday her health has deteriorated because of the pressures of royal life...."Since my marriage over 10 years ago, I have tried to do the best I can under huge pressure in an unfamiliar environment," Masako said in a statement released to Japanese palace reporters and published Saturday in newspapers.
"But I have a feeling that (recent health problems) resulted from the accumulation of mental and physical fatigue during this time," she said.

Japan's crown princess, in poor health, may need prolonged rest
Saturday April 3, 1:48 AM
TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese Crown Princess Masako, suffering from poor health, is likely to take a longer rest than expected as her condition has not improved, news reports and officials said.
Masako, 40, suffering from mental and physical fatigue, has been absent from her official duties in the past four months.Masako herself admitted in January that the pressure of living in the world's oldest royal dynasty might have led to her recent poor health.
She said her "mental and physical weariness" had accumulated, particularly after the birth of Aiko.

Masako is staying at the Owada family country house (BESOU) in Karuizawa with her mom and Aiko. Japanese I talk to about her invariably seem to use the term "neurotic" in describing her. Myself, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I kinda hate her: she's the spoiled offspring of a family that will forever be conneted with Chisso and the horrors of Minamata. Sure, Masako's smart, but her Harvard tuition was indirectly paid for by the Minamata victims.

On the other hand, I bet she'd be a damn fine lay. Love them mature Japanese wimmens!

What the hell are you rambling on about? You don't like the Pricess for something other people did BEFORE she was born? Then you reduce her to a "mature lay?" I think if you stop and think about it . . . Your an asshole.

"Your" vs "You're." Eigo sensei desuka?
Andro-pinhead, have you ever heard of the concept of priviledge? Isn't part of the schtick against Bush that he's a rich, vapid daddy's boy? Born on third base and thought he'd hit a home run? Someone who gets where they are because of hard work and intelligence - great. Someone born with a silver spoon up their ass - fuck 'em. And with Masako, I would.

Class dismissed, boy. [pimpslap]

'OFF WITH THEIR HEADS', sadly seems not to working for ' poor' Masako (or any of the Japanese royals). Despite the silver spoon, I also get the feeling that Masako-chama would be a great date and she must make the Prince look like a real 'tard on foreign trips.

Masako would be a DEVASTATING date. Intelligent, sophisticated, and perhaps a bit of a psycho, she'd be a great conversationalist and a passionate lover. "Oh dingo," she'd moan, "don't eat my baby - GIVE me a baby." And her moans wouldn't be in those Jennifer Tilley-on-helium squeals so common 'round these parts. No, they'd be deep, rich, husky moans. If I were her, I'd divorce, head to Manhattan, make a book deal for memoirs, and live a quieter life that doesn't revolve around pleasing anyone's family.

Japan Crown Prince Complains Wife Is Stifled by Palace Guard
New York Times, May 20
By JAMES BROOKE

Shuttling from the wedding of the crown prince of Denmark last week to the wedding of the crown prince of Spain this week, the crown prince of Japan, solitary and lonely, was a reminder that royal marriages are not always fairy-tale bliss.
Before leaving Japan for a 12-day European tour, Crown Prince Naruhito gave an unprecedented public outburst, telling reporters, essentially, that his Harvard-educated wife was a prisoner of the palace. Princess Masako... ...

'Broken Butterfly' Masako lonely: London Times
The Japan Times / Sunday, May 23, 2004
...the Times reported Friday in a feature article titled "The Broken Butterfly."
The British daily, quoting palace insiders, characterized the life of Crown Prince Naruhito and the Crown Princess as one of "quite extraordinary human isolation."
The couple are isolated, as they do almost no regular socializing outside their immediate family and do not even have direct phone numbers of their own, the paper said.
The princess has consulted specialists and been prescribed with a low-dosage antidepressant for a breakdown ....

I listened to that this morning and the cool part is that you can hear the Prince's PLAINTIVE voice and English in 50/50 mix. His words in English don't do justice to his near crying in Japanese.

This Kyodo story sounds hauntly freaky too.

TokyoNow: Crown princess may need much more time to recover health
Kyodo
Thursday June 10, 9:46 AM

....The couple live at the Crown Prince's Palace about 2 kilometers west of the Imperial Palace where their parents, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, live.
About 100 people live with the young couple, including four chamberlains to the crown prince and as many ladies-in-waiting to the crown princess, forming a "unique world" where they are on alert 24 hours a day.
But according to informed sources, there is no old-timer who can teach the imperial family's customs to the princess, and those at the prince's palace are a group of "amateurs" sent from government ministries and agencies....
People suitable to act as attendants at the prince's palace cannot easily be found, and it was only on June 1 that someone was named to be in charge of the education of the couple's two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Aiko....
Their messages to the emperor and empress are always conveyed through the chamberlains and ladies-in-waiting, and there are no telephone conversations between the two couples, the sources said.
