A polar bear dragged a Czech tourist out of his tent as he slept on a remote Arctic island, clawing his back before being driven away by gunshots.

Mr Moravec was among a group of six on a combined ski and snow scooter trip on the remote islands more than 500 miles north of the Norwegian mainland. The group was camping north of Longyearbyen.
The attack happened as thousands of tourists descended on Svalbard and the Faeroe Islands ahead of a rare total solar eclipse on Friday.
Mr Moravec told local media he was fine and hoped to be out of the hospital later on Thursday. No one else was injured in the attack. The bear was later shot and killed.
In further reports, Longyearbyen Tourism spokesperson Isbjorn Isbjornson commented on the story:
While our decision to kill the bear was the polar opposite of what we would have rather done, we do not feel it is an unbearable compromise given the situation. Given the increasing popularity of our islands as a tourist destination for Europeans and others from places not as wild as ours we will be looking into a system of czechs and balances to help reduce the need for such black and white solutions to an unavoidable issue, and we ask that you bear with us in our efforts.
