A senior NHK manager who denied any massacre at Nanjing during the 1930s did nothing wrong, government officials said Tuesday, as another storm brewed over the integrity of the national broadcaster.
Naoki Hyakuta, one of a 12-strong management committee responsible for programming policy and budget-setting at the publicly-funded broadcaster, dismissed as “propaganda” the accounts of the 1937-38 orgy of murder and rape by Japanese troops as they rampaged through China.

“Countries in the world ignored the propaganda produced (by then-Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek) . . . that Japan’s troops carried out a massacre in Nanjing. Why? There was no such thing,” Hyakuta said during a speech...[/quote]

Don’t want to pay your NHK TV licence fee? Beat Takeshi doesn’t think you should have to

Beat Takeshi. On the programme “Shin Jouhou 7 Days News Caster” which aired on February 21 on TBS (not NHK, then), he remarked: “Since we have the freedom to not watch NHK if we choose not to, why can’t they sell televisions which come without access to it?” Mr Takeshi was debating the television licence fee at the time with Katsuto Momii, NHK’s 21st Director-General, and Takeshi Shina, a member of the Democratic Party of Japan. “Of course, if NHK has the freedom to broadcast, then we should also have the freedom to opt out of watching it“...more...

The government will soon submit to the Diet a list of candidates to replace Hyakuta and three other governors whose terms are also due to expire at the end of February. Upon approval from both chambers of the Diet, the prime minister will appoint their successors to the NHK committee.

NHK reception agreement billing rejected (The NHK man forged the start of the TV subscription contract)
Kyodo News (in Japanese) 2015/04/15 21:26
NHK in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture sought payment of subscription fee of ¥ 180,000...the reception agreement was created when the NHK personnel visited the man's house to March 03 when, "without any seal, the NHK contract was written without consent" ...
...The judge in his ruling said that the signature of the contract was, "different from the handwriting of subscriber". In addition, the judge said that there was no validity to NHK's claim that the contract was filled out on behalf of the subscriber.

The server password named "123456" is also believed to have been involved and is currently subject to an arrest warrant.

LOL, NHK still claiming that adding the filter will not relieve you of the NHK obligation....when the whole reason it was created was:

Kakeya says he came up with the idea for the device after witnessing NHK neglect its legal duty to uphold political neutrality, a threat, he says, to democracy. Article 4 of the Broadcast Law states NHK must be “politically impartial.”

Despite the certainty implicit in that headline, I am not so sure that the filter will be found to be enough.

I am not so sure either. The filter temporary and reversibly takes away the equipment's capability. The underlying capability is still there.

However, putting the current person in charge of NHK was like putting Dracula in charge of the blood bank. He has destroyed its public broadcaster status and it is now effectively just a department of the government subject to the orders and whims of the party currently in power and the Head who is their servant. There is now clearly a principled and persuasive argument that says TV owners should no longer be forced to pay for NHK because it is no longer what it was set up to be. Power to the professor's elbow in fighting to establish that principle.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Indeed, this is the argument that should hold the most water. (until it heads to the J-courts where it will be shot down through some leap in broken "logic")

The NHK law says that you must enter into a contract with NHK – but it does not spell out the terms of that contract. Every contract that I have entered into was reviewed and if found wanting, was modified by myself. I have offered to modify their proposed contract, but they have so far not taken me up on it. Note that I have not refused to enter into a contract with NHK.

Why don't they make TV sets that cannot receive NHK broadcasts?

Yep, good point!

TV sets that cannot receive any broadcasts: yes, indeed those are computer monitors.

Thanks for enlightening me.

I'm so happy that during my 21 years here I haven't given those fuckers a single yen. No contracts signed, no money paid. Haven't even talked to an NHK guy for well over a decade.

Just thinking that NHK would create a huge amount of goodwill if they donated the money for their new headquarters to the cause of building a new Olympic stadium...

NHK needs to be liquidated - not privatized, but liquidated. It serves no legitimate purpose in a democracy.
