The shots heard round the world????

Postby kurogane » Wed Apr 29, 2015 9:18 am

So, it looks like it's 7 down and 2 to go

Indonesia executes eight prisoners for drugs offences

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32501712

Eight convicted drug smugglers have been executed by firing squad in Indonesia.

The executions took place in Besi prison on the island of Nusakambangan early on Wednesday morning local time.

However, the execution of a ninth convict, a woman from the Philippines, was postponed at the last minute.
Filipina woman Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso was also due to be executed, but this was delayed after a request by the Philippine president, a spokesman from the attorney general's office told the BBC. The request came after someone suspected of framing Veloso to carry heroin into Indonesia surrendered to police in the Philippines, the spokesman went on. Indonesia would give Veloso the chance to testify as a witness in the trial in the Philippines, the spokesman said.

I am totally opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances, except maybe for people that think that Their/They're/There are interchangeable, but I have to say the arguments of both sides of this issue seem to be full of holes, which I suppose now offers a certain final irony to the whole sordid case. Despite the often wild exchange of broadsides it seems to me that most of both arguments missed the target, and in some ways, for better or worse it is better than leaving everybody hanging, which still strikes me as a more humane method anyways.
OTOH,
Having said that, let's all do everything we can to boycott anything and everything to do with Indonesia. Money talks when it walks.

They spared the Filipina at the last minute. I'm not sure if that's a permanent thing or just giving themselves more time to look into this new suspect.

The Philippine government expressed delight at the late reprieve for Mary Jane Veloso, whose case attracted emotive appeals for mercy from boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao among others.

"The Lord has answered our prayers," Foreign Affairs Department spokesman Charles Jose said, as activists holding a vigil in front of the Indonesian embassy in Manila broke into cheers and hugged each other.

Veloso was spared after someone suspected of recruiting her and tricking her into carrying drugs to Indonesia turned herself in to authorities in the Philippines

Yeah, a brilliant ploy by the Phillipinos: get her home as an Important Witness, and then just not make her go back. Cue feigned outrage on the Indonesian side, and President Wanko's sagging poll numbers go up.

A bit clubby in MYHOMO but it may be legit, and there seems little to suggest that the Indonesian justice system is anything but a lethal 3 Stooges routine. That Cdn teacher convicted of child abuse recently looks he got railroaded whether he was or wasn't guilty.

The Indonesians seem to be on quite a huffy nativist tear lately. Don't they know it's still a shithole? Or have I missed something and it isn't so much anymore?

Anyone else noted the flagrant hypocrisy. Indonesia furiously (and rightly) protests the execution of its citizens, accused of murder, in Saudi Arabia whilst executing people convicted of drug offences at home.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Ooooh, fine work there. You get extra points.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32318131
Indonesia's government has summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador in Jakarta to protest against the execution of an Indonesian domestic worker. Siti Zainab was beheaded on Tuesday in Medina after being convicted of stabbing and beating to death her employer, Noura al-Morobei, in 1999.Neither Indonesian consular officials nor her family were given prior notice, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.

President Joko Widodo and three of his predecessors had appealed for clemency.

I despise capital punishment, but I will admit I absolutely love this recent upsurge in shameless hypocrisy.......especially this straightfaced Asian stuff. It's like the Opium Wars must have been to satirists then. Another nice one was that they postponed the executions until after that recent summit because "it would not have a good look" to do it while the guests were there and the world was watching. Almost thoughtful of them.................if you can think your way through the pounding :wall:

Yeah, I thought that seemed like quite a coincidence. Maybe that person will even admit to setting Veloso up and get convicted so the Indonesians can let Veloso go and save face. Once she's back in the Philippines they can quietly let the whole thing disappear.

I'm sure the Chinese Indonesians are bracing for another pogrom.

True but overly reductive I would say. Yes, we are all hypocrites, no-one is perfect and the rest but that doesn't preclude someone being far worse. This is hypocrisy on a monumental scale. And I agree with Kuro - The straight faced Asian variety is egregious in the extreme ......We place a high value on human life in principle. If it is the life of a member of our group then we place high value in practice too but if it is the life of A N Other then actually it hardly counts for anything at all.

250k people die every year due to heroin overdoses and nobody bats an eye - but 8 drug smugglers get executed and everyone is up in arms. But I do agree that it was a waste of human capital – better that they had been imprisoned at hard labor.

The art and sciences of shitting numbers out of any meaningful context. Almost as good as the nukabanana energy unit. But it's true that if up to x people die by accident every years we shall have the right to kill as much on purpose to ascertain the superiority of mankind over random happenstance.

So it seems that there are not that many who die from heroin, and far fewer who die from execution...

That was a US-centric report, so I will look at the example of the US Visa Waiver Program. No Indonesia. And what are people trying to express with this recent trend to follow their statements with a negative question. It shows a lack of confidence in their opinion. No?

What have immigrants got to do with it? The waiver applies to tourists/short term visitors.

I suppose so, but the UK requires Indonesians to get a visa in advance FWIW but is on that list of no visa needed, so it isn't reciprocity.

More countries to be included on RI’s visa waiver recipient list: Kalla
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on Sunday that the government would raise the number of countries whose citizens would receive visa waivers when coming to Indonesia for a vacation.

The visa waiver facilities were devised to maintain good relations between Indonesia and the recipient countries and to boost the tourist industry in Indonesia, he said.

“With respect to the Riau Islands governor’s [Muhammad Sani] request that more countries be provided with visa-free facilities for visits to Indonesia, we have been having discussions in Cabinet meetings. Actually, there will be around 60 to 70 countries granted visa-free facilities,” said Kalla in his remarks during the inauguration of Lagoi Plaza in Lagoi, Bintan, Riau Islands, on Sunday.

“Currently, we are waiting for a small change in a related law and then we will discuss it with the House of Representatives. The most important thing is that the country’s security still be guaranteed,” he went on.

In March, the government said it would waive visa requirements for 30 countries starting in April.

“We hope the government can immediately realize its promise to give visa-free facilities to 30 countries so that tourist visits to Indonesia can increase,” he said.

The governor said Riau Islands ranked third on the list of provinces with the highest numbers of foreign tourists, after Bali and Jakarta, which reached 2 million people per year.

The implementation of the visa-free facilities has been hampered by legal issues; Law No.6/2011 on immigration stipulates that visa exemptions can only be made on a reciprocal basis.

The Tourism Ministry is currently proposing the elimination of the "reciprocity" clause as it may hamper the implementation of the visa-free facilities.
