You'd be surprised how Korean some of them are. I've met a lot on this side of town that strongly identify as Korean. Some even use their Korean names and speak the language three of four generations in.

Yeah, the whole Zainichi Bashing thing really gets my nose twitching. Always has. And as Legion and others have commented of late, They seem to be doubling down on the bunker mentality. I noticed it about 2 years ago, and certainly last summer. I think they're just lashing out from economic fatigue, but it's still annoying. Mostly because the Zainichi are just Japanese anyways, though the ones that won't naturalise get not very much sympathy from me. It really is Eezy Peezy Japakneezy to do.

Interesting. The ones I met in Kyoto were full ninja. I only figured it out because of where they grew up and what school they went to. Even so, it can still be seen as some sort of bunker mentality reaction of their own, and Tokyo has a long history of actual violence, including beating schoolgirls. I have some sympathy with refusing to naturalise when such naturalisation enforces a strictly monogamous relationship with the Japanese State as Havill puts it. To be honest, I wouldn't volunteer for that kind of enforced monogamous relationship with any state on earth.

Motivation to naturalise is getting pretty thin too. The LDP have just announced that while they're revising the constitution they might as well add a state-of-emergency article that allows the PM to declare a state of emergency in which the government instantly becomes a dictatorship and the concept of human rights, including property and freedom of movement, goes out the window. Similar clauses exist in the US and German constitutions, for example, but there are checks and balances in place that prevent that power from being abused (e.g. there is a constitutional court in Germany). There are no such checks and balances in Japan, so state of emergency power would be ripe for abuse. Of course the people who are proposing this time bomb are saying "oh, of course we would never use such power inappropriately, and would always look out of our citizens' best interests."

Yeah right. There are numerous historical examples of this type of situation being abused with catastrophic consequences. And yes, Nazism was one of them.

This is probably the most dangerous idea the Abe regime has floated to date. It would be wise for fellow FGs to keep an eye on this one.

I would also never surrender my Maple Syrup stamp book until they get up to speed on the dual issue, and I get what you 2 are saying, but it's an extremely different equation: I meant for Zainichi, especially those who are effectively stateless, like most of the Best Koreans in Japan. These are native born, lifelong residents that usually know no other place except fairy tales of a mythical homeland that is actually a shithole. Even for Worsteners is there much value in a passport to a country and society to which they usually have no ties? We're all just perma-tourists whether we like it or not.

I don't share YokoH's fears as listed above but yeah.............no judgement of anybody that does so choose but for me it would just be too Weeboh-centric unless dual was allowed. Most people I know did it because it just seemed the right thing to do after so long, and the ones on the fast track programme usually have a touch of Charisma Man "Look at ME I'm Mezarasheeeee!!!".............which I find increasingly Kawaiiiiiiiiiiii in a super North American parochial way, but it's not my style.

They may have a point about violent crime but when the police are having everything from department stores to pachinko parlors give announcements about not sending money to strangers and whatnot, methinks their rosy view about crime is not as pretty a picture as they would like to believe.

Anyhow, it came full circle when they brought in the zainichi issue and blamed "Japanese crime" on them. When I put forward that even with the worst possible teething issues they're so worried about.....the first gen immigrants would make babies and those children of the immigrants would be born here, go to school here, and be more assimilated Japanese than their immigrant parents...like maybe xyz-generation zainichi, without....the visa/citizenship drama...because they'd be Japanese. Isn't it worth a little trouble to create more Japanese, regardless of where their ancestors are from?

Don't get me wrong, plenty of nasty public toilets in the US, just saying I've seen more shit/vomit covered ones here.....especially the squat toilets but even the western toilets with washlets here are pretty disgusting since most places never seem to clean under the seat. Anyhow, don't you think the "cleaner toilets" image here is more a result of the janitors than who uses them?

I did the math once (it's not difficult), and it turns out that on a per capita basis crime by foreigners in Japan is about one fifth of crime by the natives. I don't think that situation would have changed much in the year or so since I crunched the numbers.

But it's also good to remember that the not-very-well-educated in any country always blame foreigners.The man on the street in the UK or Australia will tell you that it's the bloody foreigners who are causing all of the country's problems. It's a helluva lot easier than taking responsibility yourself.

Agreed...studying abroad does open minds if they get out and actually socialize/experience life.....but I have also seen it further entrench more than a few people in the whole "US vs. Them" mentality.

I spend a lot of time in dive bars all over the world and Japanese dive bars definitely have the cleanest toilets by far. By the end of the night in a dive bar in the US the men's toilet is often overflowing, there's vomit in the urinal and/or sink, and some asshole has probably punched a hole in the wall. It's often pretty normal for toilet seats and stall doors to be ripped off too. The only thing they do better in the US is deodorize.

If we were comparing dive bars, I'd totally agree. I was more thinking restrooms at train stations, parks, shopping outlets and such. The kicker that I forgot to mention...though it's definitely improved recently...but many places still don't have handsoap or paper towels/dryers here.
