Well, there was the earthquake on Monday, the ongoing situation at Hakone, now this biggie much further down the plate boundary... I reckon the volcano popping its top on that island no-one could prounounce before yesterday was just a diversion. Anyone seen any oversized reptiles stomping about recently?

I was drinking at one of my favorite shitamachi watering holes. I was kinda hoping that was it. Couldn't think of a better place to die.

That's a funny-looking nugget.

Yamanote Line is now running again, for anyone desparate enough to turn to FG for their local transport news.

Probably ... Since the quake was so distant and deep the primary wave didn't make it to the mainland and therefore was not detected. The larger amplitude, lower frequency secondary wave sure did though.

Thank God also for that Yahoo! link, otherwise I would not have been aware of the completely unrelated
In March 2011, a magnitude-9.0 earthquake rocked northeastern Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 18,500 people and ravaged much of the northern Pacific coast. The depth of that quake was just 24 kilometers (15 miles), according to the meteorological agency.
I shouldn't be so harsh: they forgot to add nuclear disaster to the trifecta.

Malaysia earthquake: British woman arrested for 'stripping naked and causing quake on Mount Kinabalu'

A British woman is believed to be among a group of tourists arrested in Malaysia for stripping naked on a mountain, which locals believe caused an earthquake in which 16 people were killed.

The woman is aged between 20 and 33, CNN reported, and is being held alongside two Canadian brothers and a Dutch woman after they allegedly took a photograph of themselves nude at the peak's summit.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu told Malaysia's official news agency Bernama that the region's indigenous people believed that the group of about 10 foreigners had "angered the spirit" of Mount Kinabalu, causing the earthquake a week later.

The 5.9 magnitude quake on May 30 killed at least 16 people, and two more are said to be still missing.

The British woman was seized by police at Tawau Airport on Tuesday as she was about to leave for the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the other three turned themselves in on Tuesday evening, Bernama said.

A local magistrate's court confirmed they would be held for four days while the "obscene act" was investigated - and they could could face up to three months in jail or a fine if convicted.

[...]

Police commissioner Jalauddin Abdul Rahman told CNN that officers were still looking for the other tourists who stripped on the mountain.

More

It's the goats, I tell you, on that mountain, not the naked Dutch woman.

Well, they were accompanied by two males, who supposedly are not their brothers or fathers, so that makes it even worse.

Note to self. If ever climbing Kota Kinabalu again, stripped naked and take a big steaming dump.

At the very least, that should cause a volcanic eruption.

But that belongs in another thread...

I generally hold naked getting tourists in SE Asia in about as much regard as Paedobear sex tourists, but surely we can agree that causing a deadly earthquake is a little more than typical British loutishness abroad, and deserves a fitting punishment.

Latest developments:

Tribal elders have called for the case to also go before a native court.

“To appease the mountain protector, the 10 western tourists who stripped and urinated on Mount Kinabalu should be fined 10 head of buffalo, according to local customs,” said Tindarama Aman Sirom Simbuna. He said the fee was more than the usual fine of 10 chickens or one pig. “According to local beliefs, the spirit of the mountain is very angry. The tourists who angered the guardian of the mountain should pay for their mistakes by giving 'sogit’ (a peace offering),” he said.

I would be interested to hear you views on getting naked at Wreck Beach.

Malaysia is a too risky place to indulge, however. A year or so back, I read of a Malaysian national, resident in Singapore, who got a year in prison for a holding private naked gettogether with friends at a secluded beach bungalow he had rented. It got his friends a few months inside, too.

You start to wonder how these people justify getting naked to have a shower.

Oh, who cares. Wreck Beach is for gimlicks and gawkers anyways, and it's in Canada, not in a land that progress forgot. We used to run down the hill as ski training but even if we lay around on the beach we never got buck naked. Nudists are mostly mental patients skating below the restraint & confinement radar anyways.

Anyways, BOT: boy, they're sure lucky they didn't cause an earthquake in Azandeland or 17th century New England, or they would have been on the hook for an offering of eye of newt mixed with the pickled genitals of a horny toad.

As nutty as this shit is, I can't help think how public nudity in the US like this would get them labelled as "sex offenders."

:keyboardcoffee: genius

Tourism in Malaysia may cause your way of thinking to regress a millenia

SJ,
Nice one. I see that the gov't minister is now backpedalling on his seismological musings, but yeah, pretty rich. I suppose stirring up chauvinistic outrage at non-voting tourists trumps the usual domestic religious intolerance.

As douchey as I think tourists are for doing that stuff this 3rd World outrage of late is getting a bit tiresome. Ah well, more fodder for my Boycott List. Vietnam it is; fully clothed, natch.
