China's Textbooks Twist and Omit History

China's Textbooks Twist and Omit History
Getting to the meat of the lesson, the teacher said Japan decided to pursue its own longtime desire for a continental empire, and attacked China. The presentation lingered on a famous 1937 picture of a Chinese baby sitting in the middle of a Shanghai road amid the Japanese aerial bombing of China. Then, moments later, the teacher announced plainly, "America's attitude toward the Japanese invasion of China stopped at empty moral criticism."
That and an embargo on scrap metal exports to Japan (to reduce their bomb making capacity), and an overly generous lend-lease program with the Nationalists (who failed to use the weapons effectively against the Japanese), and finally a cut-off of oil exports to Japan.

What did the Communists do? They holed up in Northern China and waited the war out. They took potshots at the Japanese, but never produced any real insurgency to stop Japanese aggression.

For a better review of China during the war years, I highly suggest "Stilwell and the American experience in China: 1911-1945".

Flying Tigers livery marks US-ROC pact
The China Post June 9, 2015
Two R.O.C. Air Force fighter jets painted with the famous shark-face nose art of the "Flying Tigers" yesterday were unveiled at the northern Hsinchu Air Base to commemorate R.O.C.-U.S. alliance during World War II...
...
{One} F-16 A/B jet of the Air Force's 401st Tactical Fighter Wing was painted with the shark teeth nose as well as a logo of the Flying Tigers, according to the Air Force Command. The jet is also painted with 16 small Japanese flags to denote the number of victories over enemy planes by American AVG pilot Robert Neale, who was credited with shooting down 16 Japanese planes during WWII.

Taiwan is probably one of China's biggest problems. China claims it as their own, Taiwanese are like "fuck that shit, we're independent."

The big worry there is that China might, in an expansionist mood one fine day, decide to go all Crimea/Ukraine on Taiwan. Don't know how likely that actually is, but the possibility is not zero. Talk about destabilization.

Indeed, and without external backing, I don't think it would be much of a fight.

Wow, Taiwan is more armed than I thought. Though...

The People's Republic of China has announced that any Republic of China (Taiwanese) possession of nuclear weapons is grounds for an immediate attack. Attempts by ROC (Taiwanese) officials to form a dialogue with the PRC on the subject of weapons of mass destruction have been rebuffed.

Cause Taiwan is ambitious enough to attack/take over China?

Cause The USA would be totally relaxed about a nearby island, say Cuba, having nuclear weapons.

Coldwar Cuba, definitely not....modern day Cuba isn't quite the commie paradise that was promised and isn't exactly as buddy buddy with China as they'd have liked to become. While I see your point, the US also not trying to claim Cuba as a 52nd state or territory.

Taiwan already has nuclear weapons- the US 7th fleet. It's unlikely the US sits still while Taiwan is annihilated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan_Relations_Act

Yes. And that's why people think they need an independent nuclear strike capability. I'm not so sure, but as long as France has it, I'm pretty sure the UK will want it too. Got to keep up with the neighbours. In the meantime the fact it is inconceivable it will be used is oddly the justification for having it.

Just wish it wasn't so expensive.

Would the US really be prepared to launch a nuclear attack on China over Taiwan under any and all circumstances? I'm not convinced she would or even ought to.

Taiwan is not Ukraine.

Would the US move its own fleet between China and Taiwan in case of hostilities? It has before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Taiwan_Strait_Crisis

Would the US be the aggressor in a nuclear war? Unlikely. We didn't even do that against China in Korea.
It would probably be a conventional skirmish, but I really doubt either the Chinese or US would want this. Hence the US's policy of strategic ambiguity about what we would do seems pretty rational as a deterrent! Taiwan's not going anywhere. Nor is South Korea or Japan.

Yes, but things have changed a lot since 1955. In particular, China's military/industrial capacity has vastly increased. Fighting any kind of conventional war on or near their home turf would seem to be a very big ask.
