Mizumushi

So I was at an onsen in Niigata two weeks ago and these this Canadian dude comes into the shower room wearing bright yellow crocs. There were a decent amount of people in there but of course the first person to give him shit is a racist ol jiji. I didn't catch all of what he said but there were alot of angry sighs, gaijin this, gaijin that, kanada de wa wakaranai kedo kore ha nihon and the last resort, really loud, "KO-RE-WA-DA-MEsssu!" at the end. Up til this point the guy was just smiling and nodding. To my surprise, dude spoke better japgo than me and started lecturing the jiji on mizumushi. (He apparently rocks the crocs in every onsen he goes to and seems to have his lecture memorized) Still, the jiji and a few other gruff older doods aren't having any of it, point to me "datte, kono gaijin wa wakatteru, naze omae wa toraburu tsukuru?" Nihondewadewa blah blah blah blah.....at the end of the incident, most of the guys were grumpy still but sorta pacified when he explained the crocs he had on were only used in showers/onsen, not outside.

I've heard all kinds of wacky theories from the locals about mizumushi. Everything from "it's a disease" to "only people who don't wash their feet get that." Modern science tell us it's simply a fungal infection and one of the best ways to prevent it is "wearing sandals at public pools and showers." Back in California, wearing sandals inside public showers and such is pretty normal...but it seems like nobody dares to do so here, even the shawaasenyou type like the Canadian dude. I wash my feet crazy good and do my best to dry between my toes but I've got the mizumushi from onsens here more than a couple times. Honestly, I'd prefer to have some onsen sandals but I don't have the energy to argue everytime I go to an onsen (which is often) So are most Japanese walking mizumushi gardens or how the fuck are they not getting it everytime they visit an onsen? Is there some sort of secret powdered freeze-dried monkey penis suppli I should be taking before I visit an onsen or what gives?

Like you, I engage in risky behaviour, but unlike you, I have not had a problem. I don't know if this is any different to what you are doing, but I keep my feet dry whenever they are not wet, including avoiding wearing socks inside and wearing sandals outside whenever I can get away with it.

"Washing feet crazy good" may be part of the problem: there is a tendency, in my opinion, for some soaps and washing procedures to be too harsh for the skin, and do harm. Everything in moderation. I know that is hard to do when the guy on the stool next to you is engaging in thermonuclear warfare on his own skin cells.

Oh, and never, never, never use the communal pumice for removing horny skin cells from heels. I probably don't need to tell anyone that.

I don't use a sponge there, just my fingers and soap...but I do wear socks most of the time. They're always merino wool or some other moisture-wicking technical fabric but of course neither helps if you are exposed to the fungii to begin with. To be clear, I'm not getting full blown mushrooms growing from between my toes, just mild symptoms...and since I catch it quickly, it's gone in a few days...it's just a hassle and drives me bonkers when it happens since it seems so easily avoided by wearing sandals. Judging by all the mizumushi meds they sell here, I find it hard to believe there is some sort of "Japanese don't get mizumushi, that's only gaijin" mentality...so the idea of sandals in the shower is just thaaaat appalling that reason is out the window?)

Also....fuck that communal pumice. I almost don't even want to use the watered down horse oil shampoo/conditioner they have their either but I try not to bring anything into there besides the usual washcloth.

To get rid of foot fungus use the stuff vets recommend for treating dogs and horses with ringworm.
It works.

There's bunch of stuff to get rid of it, everything from apple cider vinegar to coconut oil apparently. I'm looking for whatever yellow magic prevents it.

So you're saying they're walking mizumushi gardens? Somebody has to have that shit for it to be so prevalent.

Easy solution is don't go to onsens. Seriously. I've never understood the appeal. I've been but I get bored in about 5 mins then I'm sitting there wondering why the fuck I paid money to take a bath with a bunch of dudes when I have a shower at home.

After a long day of work, soaking in the onsen is pretty damn relaxing but my recent trips have been out of necessity...too many bugs out to use my RV exterior shower, the camp showers close waaay early at 5pm, basically the local onsen is the only place open late and at only 400yen, it's not too bad. (it's also pretty popular)

I've had mizumushi once, a long time ago.

The doctor told me to dry the skin between my toes thoroughly after a shower, onsen, pool visit, etc.

Since then I religiously throb a tissue between my toes to dry them all up (one tissue for each foot), and I have never ever had this problem again.

Let me guess.........30dumbthing...........weedy sort of self-satisfied hipster demeanour and speech........obviously not beaten enough as a child.........?????? This new school nonchalant OCD self-absorption really gets up my nose. And I speak as the world's greatest enemy of feckin' Japanese slippers, and no great lover of onsens. I would have told him off or reported him for doing something that douchey. These newer type provincial sophisticate World Travellers really do need a few good beatings before they are allowed to get a passport. Sorry 'bout that, eh!???

BTW, what sort of shiitehole campground are you in where the showers close at 5 pm!!?????? As an alternative, if you are close to the coast any of the better tax boondoggle dollars built Seaside Parks should have decent shower facilities and a 24 hr outdoor one, though up thatta way they might be seasonal.

You just reminded me of something my friend told me years ago after a trip to Myanmar. There you're supposed to go barefoot not only inside Buddhist temples but anywhere on the temple grounds which he did out of respect. He said all the Eurotrash tourists refused and made a big show of tromping around with their shoes on while talking loudly about how disgusting it was to expect them to go barefoot in such a dirty place.

All I can say is that I am reminded of this photo and caption:

This is actually disgusting. Forcing a child who doesn’t know any better to do something just because you believe in it.

No child should be made to wear Crocs in public please stop this.

To my mind Onsen are like the Blue Cheese of bathing, which is a bit unfair to Onsen, but I agree

For all the crap that Ugly American, Brit, Aussie and Cdn tourists get from that sort of continetal cuntwad you just mentioned I find Eurotrash to be hands down the most boorish twats abroad. French in Japan and Nordic/Teutonic types in SE Asia are almost comical they're such miserly, ethnocentric douchebags, and some of the shit they pull at Japanese temples, shrines and palaces would start a war back in Europe. As annoying as Anglophones can be I will vouch for generally better behaviour and at least a gesture of sensitivity to local customs over those cunts from Europastan anyday. At the level of gross geenralisation, of course. I once met a French guy in Japan that wasn't just tolerable, he was downright cool.

Love that Croc photo caption. Nicely done to whomever did

Wait... There's pull-able shit to do in japanese temples ?

Can you link to an Howto ?

Because of all the unbearable proctologcol to suffer from in japan, public schwimming pools are at the top, but temples are near the bottom, even below Audi dealerships...

Good point about the swimming pools. I remember when I first understood WTF they were saying that I thought had just slipped through a bend in the time-space continuum and landed in my own reenactment of Planet of the Apes. You know which scene.

The temple stuff I mentioned is mostly just inappropriate horseplay and blasphemous jokes, but when they excuse themselves by claiming that it's not sacreligious because it's Buddhist, Shinto or just "Japanese" it just strikes me as too provincial even for Northern Eurocunts.
