WTF, "Cool Japan" is success?!
At last, Japan gets it
The Japan Times / Apr 18, 2015 by Roland Kelts
The Japanese entertainment industry is finally growing up, says Shin Unozawa, and he should know. Unozawa joined Bandai Entertainment back in 1981, and serves as chair of the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), co-hosts of the Tokyo Game Show.
Now he is CEO of the recently formed Anime Consortium Japan (ACJ) — a multipartner corporation launched last November, with the goal of localizing and consolidating the digital streaming of official Japanese content.
The ACJ’s lineup is top shelf: Production and advertising giants Toei, Sunrise, TMS, Aniplex, Asatsu-DK, Nihon Ad Systems and Dentsu have teamed up with major shareholders Bandai Namco Holdings and the government-sponsored Cool Japan Fund. Their primary aim is to tackle piracy and develop the first Japan-centered streaming entertainment and e-commerce platform called Daisuki. It’s as impressive as it is long overdue...
...
Only a few years ago, veteran producers scoffed when I suggested that the government might be a source of financial support and strength amid tough times. “They just want to control us,” one studio founder and president told me. “They don’t even know what we do.”
But after the Cool Japan Fund was rubber-stamped in the summer of 2013, its administrative arm, J-LOP, which distributes “Japan content localization and promotional support grants,” has proven a worthy and well-structured buttress to producers and artists who wish to reach fast-growing consumer populations beyond Japan’s borders.
“J-LOP really changed things,” Unozawa says. “Until now, there was a reluctance (in the industry) to take on government money. It was just seen as being more work for the understaffed studios. But people now see that it’s being handled professionally and fairly.”...

I read that as "Now you can finally stream media from legit sources rather than buy it from the local Chinese bootleg shops or torrent it." (Which is a stubborn jiji step in the right direction but considering the pricing here for anything, I'm not so sure they'll find the success they're seeking)

Gackt lashes out at Cool Japan: “Almost no results of Japanese culture exported overseas”
RocketNews.com | 2015J-July-3
While visiting friends who were a part of the recent Naruto stage production, Japanese film and music star Gackt was left with a bad feeling. Having watched one of the overseas Naruto performances, the singer couldn’t help but notice the lack of people in the audience.
Gackt doesn’t rule out possible flaws with the play such as too much material crammed into a short time. However, as he wrote in a recent impassioned blog post, he thinks the real culprit may be the Japanese government and their Cool Japan promotional program, which he feels is anything but.
---> “I wonder if anyone in Japan actually understands what Cool Japan does?”
Cool Japan was an initiative set forward by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI). Its purpose was to promote Japan’s “creative industries” to foreign countries. To many, including Gackt, this would mean products such as music, film, manga, and anime to name a few. Yet the performer feels that the Cool Japan budget is being sent somewhere else.
“The Japanese government made a new attempt at this in the name of Cool Japan, but while they have set up a huge budget for it, they have no idea where that money should go. It’s no exaggeration to say it has fallen into a downward spiral of wasted tax money flowing into little known companies.
Let’s assume that it is the right move for the money to go into these obscure companies. There still have been almost no tangible results of Japanese culture being exported into foreign countries. I can’t help but accuse METI of having no idea how to use this huge budget properly.”

It's success lies in keeping up constant growth so essential to support retired bureaucrats in their second careers. Golden parachutes ARE Cool Japan.

Yup. Gackt's mistake is thinking they have no idea what they're doing. They know exactly what they're doing (which is actually even worse).

I think everyone is being a bit hard on those retired bureaucrats just because they wear there pants up around their nipples. Cool is amateur Karaoke competitions, shogi, enka music, bunraku and the post office.

By the way, talking about distorted perpectives, who is fucks names would be interested in Japanese architecture? The modern stuff is so sinfully brutally bad that in any western country it would never get approved and the old stuff violates all the building codes.

I think that's the reason the J-artist making 3D models of her minge was arrested and charged.
From the J-crat perspective, the edge of the wedge leading to the possible end of pixelation and a coveted post retirement gig.

An obvious difference is how Korea has licensed it's TV dramas.
Lots of overseas sites carry them legally and they are translated into even rather obscure languages.

Korean "music" videos can be viewed on youtube. J-"music" typically has a take down notice.

All the J-industry does is enforce copyright violations with no interest in the overseas market despite an ever shrinking local market.
Still stuck in the CD/DVD era.
There is no excellent beauty, that hath not some strangeness in the proportion.

Wouldn't it be awesum if the situation was that simple...

But it seems the level of legal confusion in this country is sky high... Anyway just say you are sorry if caught... It's not the intent that count. It's the level of pretend remorse...

Don't show the picture... Just sell the molding...

I hate to admit it, but I have the feeling that this is right on the market for Cool Japan.
