Japanese Scientists Believe In Planet X

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:32 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]AFP: Japanese scientists eye new planet
Scientists at a Japanese university said Thursday they believed another planet up to two-thirds the size of the Earth was orbiting in the far reaches of the solar system. The researchers at Kobe University in western Japan said that theoretical calculations using computer simulations led them to conclude it was only a matter of time before the mysterious "Planet X" was found. "The possibility is high that a yet unknown, planet-class celestial body, measuring 30 percent to 70 percent of the Earth's mass, exists in the outer edges of the solar system," Kobe University said in a statement. "If research is conducted on a wide scale, the planet is likely to be discovered in less than 10 years," it said. The research, led by Kobe University professor Tadashi Mukai along with researcher Patryk Lykawka, will be published in the April issue of the US-based Astronomical Journal. The study comes two years after school textbooks had to be rewritten when the Pluto was booted out of the list of planets...more...

I think they are on the right track. However "dwarf planets" in the outer solar system like Eris, Sedna, and other large KBO's have thrown off gravitational mathematics just as Pluto did before it was discovered. I'm betting the Kuiper Belts hold a lot more surprises even before we discover the supposed "Planet X"

For those that don't know. Planet X originally was a theoretical planet that Astronomers have been looking for ever since Neptune was discovered. The theory is that there is a planet large enough (with enough mass) to generate enough gravity to explain some of the awkward orbital mechanics of the outer solar system. At first everyone though Pluto was that planet until it was discovered to be too small.

Now Planet X is thought to be a planet that has cleared the outer region of the Kuiper Belt. The scientist in this article think the existence of this planet explains the sudden ending of the Kuiper Belt.
