It's not that we disagree with the assessment...but the defeated sentiment has a worse effect than the whole がんばれ日本! without any ganbare movement.

The "Japan is finished" mentality must feel really good to the youth of Japan.

It could be argued that they act like they already know it.

I wonder what that scale looks like for reasonable Japanese who have lived abroad...

Not to mention the gazillions that haven't. I don't place as much stock in these Foreign Life Timers as you seem to, but they could certainly be a useful vanguard or catalyst, and provide a voice for turning the Battleship Yamato into the Japawegian monoethnic hippie love commune it could easily be. Maybe it's whom I meet, but I am not running into these liberal cosmopolitans you seem to find. Indeed, many returnees I have met or know are more entrenched and conservative vis a vis The Gaikoku (There Can Be Only One!), probably because of the heightened sense of difference and opposition that experience often engenders. Research shows that tourism (incl. WHs, etc) is as likely to reinforce preexisting stereotypes as to break them down. Plus, let's not forget that statistically returnees are a pittance; I think We meet more coz of our social circles. I wanna meet these ones you're meeting. They sound cool. I am barely batting 500 in terms of a nice meeting of minds. I get lectured a lot about The Problems of Gaikoku (guess where?? ;)) and how lucky I am to have escaped them. Nothing too aggravating, but pretty boring and very not inspiring. And I don't even get to be That Boring Canadian that SamJ so loves and agree wholeheartedly, mostly because I don't air our continental dirty laundry in public but also because they simply can't accept that the states and Canada really are different countries.

LOL, and this is people who lived abroad? Quick vacation in Guam is not what i'm talking about but actual time spent living in another country...and working for better wages without sabisuzangyo. The best example I know is a nurse who spent a few years working in Australia...only to come back to Japan and get appalled at how much less she made and how much unpaid overtime there was in the exact same position. I'm always getting lectured 海外ではand外国ではby idiots who have never been abroad, let alone to the places they feel Japan is superior to...but it's a different story when the person has been there and it's nothing like they heard/read/saw in a movie.

Japanese folks have been having fun mocking the fraudulent new National Stadium for the 2020 Olympics and I joined them at the twitter.com hashtag: #新国立競技場クソコラグランプ (twitter account is not needed to view)

Right now, bunches of reporters are rumoring on twitter that PM Abe had just announced that Japan's plans for the Olympic stadium will be scrapped. :?:
Stayed tuned for this troll of the week...

______

Yep, PM Abe says Japan is starting its Olympic stadium plans from scratch. Now, if only he'd do the same with the security bills.

The fact that "negative popular opinion" (usually totally irrelevant in japan) is used as excuse to cancel an impressively expensive pork barrel project might be an extremly worrisome indicator of the state of the finance of the japanese governement.

Now maybe not...
But since when do this country give a fuck about its nation ?

Too expensive.

They will go for a Chinese design instead...

They didn`t need to scrap the design - just the bidders. Give the contract to an Indian, Chinese, Korean - hell firms from almost any other country, and it would come in on time and on budget.

Same designer but eat your heart out Japan. Not for you.

There isn't exact data available - I wonder why. Anyway, It's safe to assume that the wages are low, the hours are long and not too much sleep is lost over unsafe working conditions for migrant workers in Qatar.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

That happens here too, along with skimping on reinforcement steel....

I`d like to see a suspension bridge design - maybe four towers and lots of cables to carry the roof. With all of Japan`s big bridges, they should have lots of experience.

Are there actually any good reasons any national Olympic committee would use foreign contractors? Part of an Olympic bid is supposed to be local economic development, after all. Or is this just more of the usual "Why doesn't Japan do what I tell it to"?

BTW< I got a good laugh at the idea of using Indian contractors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerns_ ... alth_Games I like the RCMP's Sikh uniform turban and a nice curry but those idjits couldn't organise a shit in a toilet. Of which they have a shortage.

BTW, that Catarrh stadium looks like a Klingon vagina. That architect must have a sugar uncle somewhere. She's terribly untalented.

Yeah, they could have gone for a local design by someone who has experience in that area.

And the funny thing is, they already have a big stadium with a seat capacity of 72,000 spectators. That's 90% of the required number. Why not use that and pull a cheapy?!?
