Coligny has a point.

Even beer. People chugging beer at outdoor festivals collapse of heatstroke all the time because alcohol is so dehydrating.

Beer on a hot day was once my definition of heaven though ...

The need for sleep vs the heat and sleep will win every time. It also helps that I crank ever AC unit in the house down to 16 degrees ... It doesn't mean I don't collapse to the floor licking ice cubes. Rather the ice be in the whiskey glass but I'll take what I can get.

I was out early this morning – starting at 6am I harvested from the garden (zucchini, pumpkin, green beans, cucumbers, blue berries, and black berries) – and then I started to water. This all took me thru 11am – and twice toward the end I felt feint and needed to sit down or fall down, so I sat for a few minutes before carrying on. Way too hot for me. I`ll spend the rest of the mid-day in airconditioning.

had to fix an aircon unit 1st floor this mormimg...
T'was already 30 at 0900am...

Do you have one of those old people distress beacons ?
Passing out under the sun seems as unwise as carbon monoxid poisoning... 1st you collapse because of a little exposition... then since you can't move anymore said exposition become exponentially troublesome...

EDIT:
it is now a glorious 35 (shadow) / 45 (sun)
usually hell starts after obon... if it get even worse i'm moving into a hole in the ground...
(mah bunk is at 26 with aircon full blast... I'm gunna die... you can have my stuff...)

According to the Yahoo weather service it was only 31 degrees in my city, but unfortunately, I had to go to Tokyo today. WTF, that was hottttt!

Coligny, after it really gets hot after Obon, you can always go to an open-air swimming pool.

Oh wait, most of those close after Obon. Must be a "tradtion" from the past, just like Unagi dombori.

I bet the swimming pools close then, because the ocean bathing spots close at the same time because of jellyfish.

Re: RADAR DETECTORS...

Postby Conker » Mon Jul 27, 2015 11:11 pm

Quick question:

Does anyone here actually maintain the speed limit religiously? Try it, and watch the convoy assemble itself.

I have had drivers stop and threaten me, cut me up, shoot past and then brake check me all because I had the temerity to keep them from speeding.

The problems regarding speed limits in Japan are, as I see it, twofold: one the limits are seemingly completely arbitrary - as an example, the speed limit on Mido-suji/Yotsubashi-suji in central Osaka is (after hours) higher than the speed limit on the toll roads passing through the city! Two, literally no-one observes them.

So, the choice is either risk getting in a brawl with some dickhead on a Naniwa plate, or play cat and mouse with the rozzers.

Speaking of rozzers, they are getting sneaky. On a trip through Yamaguchi I was held up behind a stinking diesel wagon. So, when the road widened into a dual carriageway, I thought it would be a nice opportunity to pass and get a clear view of the road. As I was passing the truck, I noticed in the mirror that the guy driving the sports car immediately behind me wasn't following me. I glanced up ahead and saw something twinkle so I clapped on the anchors just as I was nose to nose with the truck. Sure enough, a mobile speed trap.

Keep your wits about you!

Yup... The key is not to care aboot the rabid hordes groing behind...
On the highway I usually try to convoy behind a Yamato or Sakai truck. Since they are anal retentive with speed limit i usually just need to keep my usual distance no need to check the speedo...

Good points, but I wouldn't call the speed limits arbitrary, because then there would be limits that would be way too high too. I just would call the speed limits "not well thought out". Your second point is a consequence of the first point: people consider the speed limits pointless, so they will be less likely to observe them. The slack enforcement does not help either.

You realize that on the expressways, they can't cite you for 10 or less km/h over the limit? would be nice if they raised the limits to at least 90 so you would be fine at 100 but saaaaa

Anyhow, regarding asshole drivers (myself included) ...you know they're too close when their headlights disappear under your rear window...on friday night, I was making my usual pilgrimage out to the mountains and some impatient fuck was riding my ass like he wanted to know what I had for breakfast....while I was stuck behind a slow truck. Being too close for a real brakecheck, I just softly applied the brakes til we were down to about 60...erratic swerving and frustration set in as the line of trucks in the next lane (what the truck in front of me was trying to pass) was even slower. He came up on my one more time, no honking or high beaming, just close enough to read the model info printed on the rear window. This time I hit the brakes a little harder...he overreacted with a harder panikkubureeku....and stayed way the fuck back after that. Even after we passed the slow caravan of trucks, he seemed too scared to pass me or get up on me again.

I don't think the disappearing headlight trick is on purpose most of the time: people just really are that stupid. I find it worse in Japan because of the Momma's Boy drivers that haven't learned to play well with the other kids on the road but only marginally more common than Canada or the UK. Here in Da North we call your solution the Scottish Hello: tap your brake pedal just enough to light up the back and watch the fun begin. The ones that are doing it on purpose usually then have a full freak out so you can tell they meant it. Then I do the speed limit minus 5 or 10 (also legal, btw) until we get to a passing lane, wait to go right (i.e. the slow side) long enough to make them think about going right, then go right. It's good cheap fun, and I have had a few skives actually pull up beside me in town to voice their opinion; which means they have now driven slowly enough to keep pace with my snail like progress, which means they were obeying the speed limit in spite of themselves.

What is the 80 kph limit you speak of ? For normal trucks and cars it's 100kph.
80kph is a sublimit when towing other vehicle (dedicated wreckers only) or other special vehicles.
Minimum speed is 50kph

Oh, whenever possible I let them pass, most indubitably. As long as there is no tailgating I am quite proactive and friendly; it makes both drivers happier anyways. The Scottish Hello should be reserved for those times when it is not but the driver behind hasn't quite figured out what that means and that just following really, really close doesn't actually help and might even be dangerous. But I do think it important to obey the old rules and hesitate to attribute to malice what can be better explained by emospastic retardation. Most genuine a'holes aren't actually malicious anyways; they just weren't beaten enough at home or school and never really learned to grasp their Olympian mediocrity.

Me neither. I've seen 70 km/h limits, though.

Do you guys observe the temporary 50 km/h limits which are put in place after a splattering of rain? I've only seen speed limits that low in a pea-soup fog in my native country!

Seriously?
The Tohoku expressway is 100 km/h. All other expressways up here are 100 km/h. The Tomei is 100 km/h.

Restrictions are sometimes applied, but normally it is 100.
