I would agree that you do not see 100 limit signs. It is probably like the 60 limit on normal highways, that information is broadcast by telepathy (or maybe learner driver education).

Yup... The key is not to care aboot the rabid hordes groing behind...
On the highway I usually try to convoy behind a Yamato or Sakai truck. Since they are anal retentive with speed limit i usually just need to keep my usual distance no need to check the speedo...

You realize that on the expressways, they can't cite you for 10 or less km/h over the limit? would be nice if they raised the limits to at least 90 so you would be fine at 100 but saaaaa

.

What is the 80 kph limit you speak of ? For normal trucks and cars it's 100kph.
80kph is a sublimit when towing other vehicle (dedicated wreckers only) or other special vehicles.
Minimum speed is 50kph

I've yet to see a 100km/h speed limit sign in Japan...

Seriously?
The Tohoku expressway is 100 km/h. All other expressways up here are 100 km/h. The Tomei is 100 km/h.

Restrictions are sometimes applied, but normally it is 100.

~ Tapatalking ~

Seriously....I'm always hearing people say this or that expressway is 100 but all I've ever seen is 80km/h signs?

Maybe you're just missing the bit that says "Trucks: 80 km/h."

It is 100 for normal traffic on the main expressways (except for the Shuto of course, which is barely an expressway of any sort).

Ok guys, one really counter intuitive truth on japanese speed limits for regular cars and trucks:

For all roads except expressways the speed limit is 60kph. Unless a speed limit sign restrict it to a lower speed. Or more exceptionnally a higher speed (80kph as seen around Yokohama if I remember well)

For all expressways the minimum speed is 50kph the maximum speed is 100kph unless speed limit signs indicates a different set of values.

So, if there is no signs: 60 kph on roads, 100kph on expressways. The law/end of story.

So it's basically 100 unless otherwise posted? In the land of red and green arrows for every fucking direction, seems a bit inconsistent, no?

The times I drive that lonely, unlit, route, you don't see much besides the occasional truck. Total speed dashihoudai.

I need more c4 to blast the holes for the piping. That's where the problem is. Last time I drilled 1cm hole for the CCTV it was 30 minutes per holes, 2 masonery drill bits and a hammer drilling machine ruined for 3 holes...

Anyway as long as you can make it before full lockdown without eating a family of braziliun on the way ya welcome... After that I fire up the flame throwers and it's BBQ from hell time...

They don't need 3 digits signs since the 100kph is implied if you see a stroked 80kph sign signalling the end of the speed restriction for an expressway...
Same, on regular roads you're never supposed to see 60kph signs as it's the implied speed limit.

So basically drive 100/60 unless otherwise posted...weird setup....how far from an 80km/h sign before you can jump back up to 100?

If it's a change from a restriction to the legal limit (60 or 100) there will be a "ここまで" indication, like this:

2a7490567b8022bdf0802abe44c1de5c.jpg

... or a left arrow below the sign.

If it's a change from a speed restriction to another speed restriction, the new speed will be posted (duh).

But it looks like this:

If the arrow points to the right it means "starts here" rather than "ends here."

Jeebus...just like the traffic signals and so much else, they're managed to clutter/over complicate what should be a really simple system.

According to some J-bloggers, there are more road signs here than anywhere else in the world. As Wags has pointed out several times...at a certain point, all the signs become a legit distraction from driving.

Also, don't confuse the above with a speed limit sign where the number is simply underlined.
An underlined number indicates a minimum speed limit rather that the end of the speed restriction.

On the other hand, the idea of a maximum legal limit that doesn't require signage does mean that it can be changed at any time without having to erect even a single sign!

Oh those clever people ...

....or they could just utilize those LED signs? They get their signs AND they have the flexibility of upping the speed limit without the need for new signs.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge from Honshu to Awaji island are full with those signs. I kind of figured out by thinking like a mathematician that these were minimum speed limits. Makes sense, because many cars want to go slow there to enjoy the breathtaking views.

This arrow pointing Left sign is more often used to indicate the end of a no parking or no uturn zone.

Basically:
-> : this arrow is for start of a zone that you can expect to end before the next intersection
<-> : continuation of a zone
<- : end of a zone

In the city, restriction for speed/parking/uturn are valid until the next road cossing. Unless they are cancelled early by a negation sign.

designing user interface requires to account for few things:
user psychology and behaviour.

which are borderline illegal to acknowledge in this shithole where the pretext to crush the individual is to put an imaginary common good forward, first and foremost... and to ignore it too because it can't really be defined. But while keeping the smug self righteousness...
