Retraction of Olympic emblems leaves sponsors scrambling to revise ads
Mainichi.jp | 2015-Sept-02
…
Since the emblems were unveiled on July 24, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government had placed orders for goods with the logos printed on them, with the contract money totaling some 46.52 million yen as of Sept. 1. Among those contracts, the metropolitan government has already paid out 42,012 yen for back panels used at Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe’s press conferences and 297,000 yen for 100 posters.
Apart from these, the metropolitan government will likely have to pay a total of around 2.77 million yen for related items already delivered — 20,000 posters, 540 banner flags, 4,000 paper bags and 16 notices at airports. “We haven’t discussed the matter from a legal perspective. We will look into whether we can file a damages claim with the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee,” said a metropolitan official on Sept. 2…more…

Gov. Masuzoe criticized the mess on his Twitter account in the predawn hours of Sept. 2, saying, "It leaves a sour aftertaste. Just like the problem surrounding the new national stadium, unclear responsibility and insufficient information disclosure are behind this latest problem."

He forgot the word "corruption".

I bet the printers are asked to take this on the chin, on the promise of other work in the future.

I thought you weren't supposed to start publicizing your Olympics until the after next ones are finished. If I had sponsored the 2016 Olympics and some other company started waffling on about 2020 I'd be pissed off.

I hate to be the one that breaks it to you man, but The Great Feline Uprising is about as plausible as the idea that they actually landed on the moon or that 9/11 was real. For one thing, cats can't even organise their own fucking lunch, never mind plan and execute a violent overthrow of their masters and betters. Look how much trouble Sylvester had just trying to eat a Tweetie Bird, never mind that assraped butt whore of Pepe LaPue (a tomcat, btw). But the real reason that you Feline Overlord Conspiracy theorists seem to overlook is the most important one of all: kitty kats are simply delicious. Ask a pack of racoons. It's why when some poor lost soul posts a Missing Cat ad in my neighbourhood, some local wit that seems to carry a marker pen around actually bothers to write over it:

Not Missing, Eaten.

Back to square one it is. :biggrin2:

She should be suing Fox News rather than Hasbro. Maybe it's a cunning plan. First demonstrate beyond all reasonable doubt that working for Fox News has destroyed any grounding in reality, judgement and the ability to accurately apportion responsibility. Then sue them the fuck out of them for the damage.

We can but hope.

And yeah, she's hot in that horsey American kind of way. A properly fitted and large enough ball gag would be absolutely essential essential though.

Apparently all the online studios are booked full at the moment with sponsors re-editing their TVC end cuts. Considering Japanese TV stations insist on delivery on tape rather than data there may have also been many millions of yen and many hours of studio time wasted on printing copies for distribution.

And I'm still convinced they should not have been adding "official sponsor" onto ads until after the Rio Olympics are finished. Maybe there is a clause for national ads in a host country.

Huge amount spent on canceled Olympic emblem

Japan Sep. 4, 2015 - 21:18
The organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games says ...
...
it paid 400,000 dollars in the search for whether similar designs exist, and if not, apply for its own trademarks.
It also spent more than 70,000 dollars to have design experts choose emblems and produce posters and other items carrying the emblems.
The organizer will have the additional expense of at least 420,000 dollars for fresh searches when it chooses new emblems.

It seems to be the new go to when trying to convince people that "Japan's future is bright." The problems that plague everything about it probably say more to the reality of the future but I do wonder how much of an Olympic "hangover" the country will have afterwards.

I think it's a domestic consumption thing. Vancouver was awash in propaganda for ages before the actual event, though whether it started even before the handover from Turin 2006 I prefer to forget, being the tiresome BS that it is.

matsuki wrote: It seems to be the new go to when trying to convince people that "Japan's future is bright." The problems that plague everything about it probably say more to the reality of the future but I do wonder how much of an Olympic "hangover" the country will have afterwards.

I'm not sure it's that programmatic. The Keystone Kops flavour of this one aside that level of hype seems pretty standard for any tax wasting boondoggle event anywhere they're held. There is obviously a perceived need to get the masses behind it, but again, SOP for wasteful silliness like this.

matsuki wrote: Hahaha, indeed. I meant they psychological aspect of over hyping and overspending on something like this...and totally failing to deliver on any of it.

This is what gets my goat. Unlike Some People ( ) I am perfectly happy to let them be who they are anyways, and they really do love a Big Todo; I find their childlike excitement quite heartwarming even if I don't share it. This should have been the biggest and longest Fireworks Festival they have had in ages, and we all know how spastic they get over those. Instead, it's turning into an Asian Driving Skills contest:
"Let's see how long it can take us to parallel park on an empty street".

The doddering incompetence of these kleptomaniac gerontocrats is shameless, and though there is 5 long years left to get their shiite together I think the sheer levels of waste, nepotism, cronyism and blinding incompetence will sour it for more than a few people, not to mention how little tangible, long term economic benefit there will be relative to investment. The Panglossians in Vancouver claim our booming local economy has only the Giorious 2010 to thank, conveniently forgetting that everybody and their dog has always wanted to move to or at least buy a house in Vancouver so it was wasted advertising anyways, and we are quickly running out of kennel space.

If you're a construction, cement, or a company in some sort of directly affected industry that feels this injection of gov. spending viagra, more power to you....but I doubt it's going to have the trickle down effect it claims. I'm more concerned at the hype and posturing by kankeinaisya who have nothing/little to gain and are just following the J-gov lead because...well, because because....TIJ.

OK I have been holding back from asking, but I will hold back no longer. What is the source/reference for the artwork? Is it anything more than the Sisyphean task of running an Olympics, with the addition of a guy in an isolation suit, or is there a deeper cultural reference which is whistling past over the top of my head?
