My barber (cuts hair, not old woman) saw it and said there was lots of tiny mistakes, stuff like snow on Mount Fuji in the middle of Summer, (Is there ever snow at that time? It's a bit hard for me to see from where I live).

I suppose that the locals are going to pick up on this kind of thing a lot more. I saw a very highly rated film that was made back home and thought it absolutely sucked.

I'll reserve judgement until I see it myself, but only if I can see it at half price.

Gee, I vaguely remember posting this one last night, but it's not in the forum.

Anywho, good show I give it a 8.5 out of 10.

Had sushi before the show.

Tell your mamasan, it's a movie.

Hollywood will often do that for theatrical effects.

Actually I forget which forum I saw it in but I do remember seeing two virtually identical threads when you first mentioned it gone in "New Members - Introduce Yourself! "

Now some dingleberry is deleting my posts!

Be a man and fess up.

I was just trying to help...but now that you mention airplane glue, I've been meaning to ask about your hair...

Probably not. I get the impression that most, if not all, foreign-made movies about Japan are subject to some pretty intense scrutiny. Mind you, I'd say the same applies back home too.

Anyway, I'll reserve judgement until I see it for myself

why i hate white liberals

Postby foody » Mon Mar 01, 2004 3:35 pm

okay okay... being a bit of a devils advocate, seeing how i am pretty much a white liberal myself. lets see if you agree with me on this.

i overheard one of my co-workers, an american girl about 24, telling her students that "the last samurai" wasnt at all japanese and that it was completely american.

now i understand this might be true. that isnt my arguement. i just thought that there was something wrong in this girl woman who has been in japan about 5 months thinks she knows japanese culture enough to preach to japanese people about what is or isnt japan.

there is an underlying arrogance in white liberals where they try to not be imperialistic and insensitive but end up doing anyway in a completely backhanded way.

now i know i am using a broad brush here, but i think there is a point to be made.

(and i was trying to figure out a better word than "imperialistic" but couldnt think of it)

Foody, this post doesn't really conform to the posting guidelines for FG. For one, your title is misleading and sounds like a topic for Beyond F*cked or for "Upcoming Erections". Please label your topics so that they better conform to the content of your posts.

Also, if you had done a quick search for "The Last Samurai", you would have seen that a thread already exists for this movie. It was unnecessary to form a new topic when you could have just posted this in that thread.

Posting guidelines are now visible whenever you post a message. Please follow them accordingly.

Seeing as I am a libertarian and relatively conservative and I've actually spent some years studying Japanese cinema and literature, I can tell you that though you coworker expresses the typical arrogance exuded by expatriates who think they've conquered the world, she is mostly correct. The final sequence of the film was historically inaccurate and most of the lines seem to be derived from stereotypical western impressions of the samurai, not the book of five rings. In terms of cultural imperialism, we are all by proxy guilty of it simply by being here and teaching our barbarian toungue. But hey its better than coming in with guns the way we used to. Additional problems with the film are Cruise's over acting and the impossibility of a samuari's wife falling in love with the Gai-jin who killed her husband. Still Wantabe did a lot with some terrible dialogue and his death scene was easily the most homoerotic in recent memory...

My major was Japanese history in college, and I loved Last Samurai. Realistic? No! The samurai were a pretty bored lot of bureaucrats come the mid-1800s. Tragic warriors are way cooler.

If you've ever watched old Japanese movies, you'll see a lot of similarities to Last Samurai in terms of content and characterization. This movie is really a throwback to Japanese cinema circa the 1950s, only with a few gaijin added in. Samurai haven't been romantic tragic heroes for a while.

My gf's co-worker recently returned from a trip to Thailand with a DVD of The Last Samurai, which cost him about a whopping 600 yen. He lent the DVD to my gf and we began watching it one evening, and got halfway through when it began skipping and became impossible to watch. :violin: The quality sucked anyway as it was recorded in a movie theater, even though it was carefully done. I guess he got what he paid for. The movie looked okay up to the point where the DVD went to hell, but I wouldn't pay theater admission to see the rest of it.

Anyhow don't waste your money on sh!tty Thai DVDs on your next sex adventure in Thailand. :bukkake:
