60 Japanese arrested in raid for working illegally in Philippines

Around 60 Japanese nationals have been arrested for working illegally in the Philippines after authorities raided a Japanese-owned call center at an IT park in Cebu City.

Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation on Friday raided the Japan Intertrade Call Center Corp, which occupies a unit on the fifth floor of TGU Tower in the Cebu I.T. Park, and arrested the Japanese for working without permits.

They reportedly confiscated the computers, gadgets, and documents of the Japanese nationals for further investigation.

The Philippine Star newspaper quoted NBI-7 Assistant Regional Director Augusto Eric Isidoro as saying the Japanese nationals may face charges before the court and may also be automatically deported even without administrative proceedings.

If convicted, they could face three months to three years of imprisonment and/or a fine.

According to the company’s website, it was established in 2009 as an officially registered corporation, not a joint venture with any local enterprise, with 99% of its shares held by its representative Eiichi Chiba.

It says the company has 40 Japanese working for it and is certified by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

According to informed sources, the company’s management is asserting that those arrested did not need to secure work permits from the Department of Labor and Employment as they were on half-year internships.

I wonder if the people working there knew they were illegal or really thought it was a legit internship.

That reminds me of my friend back in the US who married a Korean lady. When they had a kid his mother-in-law went to stay with them for a a few months on the visa waiver. She applied for an extension but was rejected because the reason she gave was she wanted to help her daughter take care of the baby. As far as Uncle Sam was concerned that was work that someone could be paid for and not a valid reason to stay.
