Census 2015

Postby Salty » Tue Sep 15, 2015 7:02 am

I just finished my online census responses – 20 questions or less, depending upon how you answer a few of them. Took 10 minutes or so. The only question that I thought was odd for a census was – whether I had a smart phone.

You get a Good Citizen star. People that won't answer censuses (censi??) drive me batty. So, Smart phone or no, eh? Well, such data is certainly vital to formulating effective social and economic policies as Japan rushes headlong into the late 20th century, but they're probably just selling that data to Google

On a side note, if they survey the prison population what sort of census would that be?

Apologies. Wrong thread.....................

In principle, yes. It's a census, a vital national demographic database essential to good governance. I do believe that in Canada of late the redneck voice is being honoured and they are allowing variance for inbred ignorance

Not if you want to know the value on considering them a valid plateform for emergency and disaster communication. Before it would have been "do you have a tv set" or "do you have a radio"
A better unified comm strategy would be nice... For now it's yahoo weather for heavy rain alert, Toyocky wurnang maillist for river flooding and tornadoes and finally yurekuru for quakes.
Luckily most of them are location aware. But there is not threat map pushed or active shelter list. That's a shitload of things missing or disfunctionnal. Knowing that the data are already available as well as the comm infrastructure. It would only take one good software to centralize everything...

Why? What is so objectionable about a census and how else can people plan the provision of essential services in a rational and efficient manner.

I don't get it.

I think I ended up twice on the last census due to stupid bitch ex-wife being unable to comprehend the instructionas about who to include on the form.

Yep, about 10 minutes, and no particularly difficult or annoying questions.
Looks like they've stopped asking for approximate yearly income.

Interesting they dropped the yearly income question. I suppose the tax agency already has those stats anyways. That was one of the few questions I could sort of get as too invasive when the unterleutens get angry about the census.

BTW, just because I was curious and looked it up, the plural of census is censuses, not censi, so everybody can relax and go back to what you were doing. Apologies for the wait.

The -us to -i pluralization is usually wrong.

Narooheso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has certainly struck me as plebby sophistication, like people that use myself and yourself when they mean me and you. Even Stephen Fry, the Major Domo of pompous poseurs occasionally slags that sort of thing. To be fair to him, he seems to actually know the rule. Something about whether the root is one dead language or the other dead language.

Even when the root is Latin it's perfectly acceptable if not preferable to add "es" rather than changing "us" to an "i" in most cases.

So is the "i" for plural endings only when the word is originally from the Greek then, maybe? I remember in university getting docked marks for using "ise" (rationalise, etc) and when I fought it I found out the rule was you can only "ise" when the root comes through Latin from Greek and all the words I had been corrected on did, even though that was a total fluke. WARNING: I may have reversed the rule there. Nobody that wants to matter should care a wit how others speak anyways, bad grammar being merely unseemly whereas pedantry is the signature of a true boor, wot wot.

It's always nice to know the rules just not to care too much.

EDIT: WRONG again. -ize is the original from Greek and Latin. Generally "-ise" is for imported French words (that may or may not come from Gr/Latin) and when the -ise/ize ending is integral to the word rather than a verbal suffix (compromise vs. rationalize) and both are correct in non-American though consistency is a virtue.

No, "i" is for Latin words (alumnus/alumni).

http://grammarist.com/usage/hippopotami ... es-hippos/

I had a rich Chinese Malaysian friend in college who was educated in British English at an expensive private school in KL and spoke perfect English. The first paper he wrote had lots of red marks for all the "incorrect" British spellings. He complained to the teacher but she basically said this is America, write American. I wonder how long it took him to adapt.

Accurate Latin plurals rely on knowledge of the correct declension of the original Latin, that is, a knowledge of Latin grammar. It is not universal that all -us form a plural -i.

Accurate plurals in English of words adopted from Latin require a knowledge of English grammar. No one will think less of you if your pluralise as an English word. If you create a plural as you think it would be in Latin, you run the risk of being wrong and laughed at by those who know better, or you run the risk of being right and being laughed at as a pretentious dick.

Putting on my pretentious dickhead hat, the correct Latin plural of census is census. Try using that in English and you risk misunderstanding. I will burn this hat! Or else destroy it in a series of vacua (another unusual plural) And of course if we had a team of administrators here they would be octopodes.

I just had a reminder that the time limit for answering online is this Sunday come in a pamphlet in my letterbox. So much for making this paperless and reducing the labour required in going from house-to-house distributing paper... but it actually was a good thing because it got me to get this out of my pile of things to do, and otherwise I would have been too late.

The question about the smartphone is in the questionnaire after the online response, it is optional and it is to do with feedback on running an online census. They are asking so that they can consider whether making it even more smartphone friendly is important or not.

Apparently, in our case, the notification came via the community round robin notification system. Seems astonishing for something so important and begs questions of inclusion but there we are.

For us the timeframe was Sept. 10~20. Sept. 20 is the limit.

A local agent (it was a friend of ours ... small community) brought the form to our house. When I say "form," it was basically a piece of paper with a registration code and a password printed on it that you used when going online, plus a single-fold brochure explaining the procedure. Apparently that form should be handed to you in person (for somewhat obvious reasons) by whoever your local census agent is.

You might want to check online to see what the situation is.
Links at the bottom of the page linked below might get you where you need to go.

The URL we were given is: http://www.e-kokusei.go.jp/

Edit: Yeah ... might find something here: http://kokusei2015.stat.go.jp
