There's Nogawa Koen, and a nice walk next to it along Nogawa River, for dog walking the riverside is probably best, you can choose the bank without the path and get some more space to sniff.

A stupidly dangerous idea. But that can be done right.

Landing a plane on a boat takes a few seconds.

Spent fuel rods are very heavy, require constant cooling, and stay fatally toxic for thousands of years. Nobody wants them, nobody wants them going past their door on a train or truck on their way to "safe" storage or "reprocessing". It's an accident waiting to happen for about 5000 years.

But hey, après moi, le déluge

That looks like a park that I would've enjoyed in my youth.

Reminds me when I was a little kid, some trucking company parked a tank trailer in our playground. Complete with a tank full of white powder. I remember I had a lot of fun behind the steering wheel, though now and then something broke off (it is a playground after all, isn't it?). My parents complained many times to the company about this truck being parked there with unknown contents, but they did not take action.

In the end this trucking company tried to lay claims with my parents for damage to their truck, but my old man told them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

Life Expectancy Gap Between City And Country Folk Widens

A life out in the countryside away from congested cities is often viewed as a safe, wholesome, and healthy way to exist. But a recent study indicates otherwise, by finding that over the last 40 years the life expectancy of city folk has grown more than those who live out in the boonies — and this unrecognized gap is only going to widen.

A Very Clever fail.

It's pretty hard to argue that what legion is arguing is not true at least on one simple level: it's nicer to grow up somewhere where even Kermit the Frog has it easy. Also pretty easy to imagine that children growing up in areas not characterised by environmental monotony and constant urban cacophony are better able to develop those senses and abilities fostered by a more ecologically complex environment. Rolling down a grassy green mound is simply better for you than doing the same on a cobblestone sidewalk. I think that must be a factor in my own pathological dislike of Big City Life. I simply cannot take that much noise, though the restaurants are a lot better.

And The Hive Mind still remembers you once nostalgically pining for the danger and excitement of The Big City Amerikkkan Style over the ramshackle Uber security of Tokyo. Which is surprisingly common, but still makes you a Weerdo.

The article appears to state that average income in rural areas is lower, access to health care is lower, smoking rates are higher, accident rates are higher, and obesity rates are higher.

In other words, they are comparing two different socioeconomic groups.

With all factors the same, the difference between rural and city life may simply disappear or reverse.

I thought you might like that.

I'm not saying one is objectively better or worse. I don't really care where people want to live. However, I get tired of people saying, "I can't imagine living like that," as if they're somehow superior for choosing to live in the suburbs or country. They certainly do it a lot more than city dwellers do.

I think you're misremembering. I have nostalgia for Manhattan when it was more dangerous but not because it was more dangerous. It's because it was more fun, still had Jewish delis and good pizza, had tons of mom and pop groceries and restaurants, had dive bars with two dollar happy hours, and middle-class people could almost afford to live in some neighborhoods. Now it's been taken over by national chains and every block has a drug store and a bank where that great Italian butcher and polish diner with the awesome brunch used to be. I have no problem with the security of Tokyo. I've always liked the fact that seedy nightlife and safety are not mutually exclusive in Japan. I do think it's an ugly city though. Plus the suburbs and small towns in Japan do have more greenery but they're still fully of poorly build ugly ramshackle buildings.

This is true. Flatlanders named Jimbob bitching about how crap Vancouver is get up my nose in about the same way. I could, however, see it having a considerable difference in childhood cognitive development, not to mention their happiness, at a statistical level, of course.

Aaaah, Narooheso. My bad. I agree. I always envied true urbanites just because Mai Wonder Years Vancouver had so few truly urban amenities we never got much of that. On the other hand we did have 48 sq. block parks within 5 mins. Which was nice.

I agree that Japan is pretty ugly, though I would always take the indifferent ramshackle of a true town over the cookie cutter sterility of a Mitsui Homezu purpose built suburb. Those are simply godless; even the grass lined boulevards are depressing, whereas the towns are simply tacky. Which might or might not bring us back to Mitaka, where I have never ever been.

By the way, I read an article the other day that said there are now fewer than 20 Jewish delis in all of NYC (only two in the Bronx) and most of them aren't Kosher. That's really depressing. :(

There are nice bits of Mitaka, but you do have to search to find them. The same can be said of most places. Those of which you can't say that, are the places where there is no beauty however much you search. Of those places, you say there are no nice bits, just some bits are a little less shit.

Had to use my own stash...

Btw we found the dreamplace to live while getting lost(*) last weekend. On the riverside called Shimoji... Better teach the cats how to swim if we move there....

(*) when google maps offer a journey that we find a little too twisted but decide to follow it just to see what will pop up on the way... It confirmed our usual observation that the best discoveries are done while being -sort of- lost.
(I can hear someone furiously fingering while singing the mantra "coligny is so dumb that he'll follow his gps inside a lake...)
Works with most cities... Paris, Saigon... Plan journey, randomly deviate from planned path... Enjoy...

Maybe they were funded by the Ministry for the Bleeding Obvious? I only breezed through the article but I thought it seemed sound enough: ruraloids die younger because they live like shit. The only way to even begin to solve problems like that is to bludgeon the fat fucks with a blunt instrument.........over and over again. After all, these are people that think Their There and They're are interchangeable according to mood and moon phase and that reading is something you do when there's no options left.

Yes, that's the problem with people from places where breeding with vegetables is an accepted behaviour.

Cats are natural snakes predators, and to some extend quite few didn't get the memo aboot crocodiles being in a different category... How do you think Puss in boots got his swag ?
