"My Japan"

Postby Caustic Saint » Wed Dec 17, 2003 11:03 am

Inspired by the Enloa Gay discussion, I present this charming bit of propoganda.

Image

My Japan, courtesy of The Prelinger Archives, a treasure trove of old media. This film was originally made by the U.S. Treasury Department, War Finance Division, so expect a bit of bias.

Offered as a historical document, and not a reflection of any personal beliefs I hold.

Hahaha, I love the narrator. It would be comedic gold, if it wasn't so horrible true (Not the stuff in the film, the fact that they expected people to beleive it).

Hm... The blood on the bayonet comment is classic.

Almost as interesing as those WWII Loony Toons. I still wish I could see the one when Bugs Bunny single-handedly repells an invasion of 1940's stereotypical Japanese ("Japs, thousands of them!").

Is there any Japanse propaganda about America like this, preferably subbed?

Hehe, you're welcome. I actually went over the video a few times so I could get the right number of letters in the "YEAH," even down to the exclamation points.

I was going to add the "Ippai Kirei Jousei" part too (or at least use it as another signature), but I wasn't sure what form of "agemasu" you used (Sounded like there was something before agemasu, but I couldn't tell, my Japanese is still in the "jouzu" level :D)... Although I might have just misheard you.

I'm still waiting for the video "Children of Japan" to finish downloading, so I can have a nice contrast to the "My Japan." A copy of "Our Enemy: The Japanese" would also be interesting... I also watched the "Japanese Relocation" video, which was interesting, and ALMOST convincing, but still so horribly propaganda-filled.

You should produce a black-and-white 50's-style mocumentary about the origins of Roppongi. :D

Here's another old film on Japan from the archives:

Children of Japan isn't a propoganda film like "My Japan," even though was made in the same era. This one was made in 1941, prior to Pearl Harbor.
