Not only a severe problem here of course - there are plenty of horror stories in the UK. The licencing authorities just keep renewing their licences which makes it very very hard for the kids to put a stop to them continuing to drive.

It is more severe here simply because of the profound demographic shift that is underway - especially in more rural locations. And it's accelerating. A huge unaddressed issue - as are the care/support needs that underpin people continuing to drive well past the point where it is safe.

I'm not a technophobe but I don't really give a fuck about technology and was perfectly fine with a flip phone and a laptop.

Like SJ said, it's good for mindless chicks. You can send dumb emotes and be anonymous. It's apparently good for cheating on your partner because it isn't tied directly to your phone so you can have multiple accounts and never need to give out your real info.

You can't have multiple accounts on one device. There probably are better apps but if people aren't using them in this market it doesn't matter. I think LINE is popular here because it was developer here though it's owned by Naver (in other words, Koreans. One of my right-wing Japanese friends won't use it because of that. ). There's also the social media function, games, a lot more Japan specific content, and they allow anonymity which a lot of Japanese people still prefer. BTW, it's not just dumb broads anymore. Basically the only Japanese people I meet who don't use LINE are the ones still using flip phones.

I can't remember which messaging app it was but when I was in New Orleans last year with some buddies we all downloaded one of those for the trip so we could communicate as a group since people were staying in different hotels and it as a big group so we'd often end up scattered around town drinking in different places. It also meant that no one had to censor themselves because at the end of the trip we all just deleted the app from our phones so there was no evidence for those who had wives/girlfriends. No one actually cheated or anything like that but message like, "We just met a bunch of chicks at the pool! Come down and bring some booze," could cause some problems.

Like SJ just said and like facebook, if everyone is using it, resistance is futile. 90% of my customers here in Japan use LINE to hit me up and ask questions. It is more convenient than e-mail, especially if you're on the go.

[edit] Anyone ever had their LINE acct hacked? I met this cut 23yo on a flight last month, exchanged a few LINE messages, then she suddenly stopped replying. Figured she just lost interest but then I just got a message from her LINE saying she wanted to reset her LINE acct and needed my number (MY Numbaaaa couldn't be more horribly named) I complied but then got a message that someone was trying to access my LINE acct from another device and NOT to give out the confirmation PIN to anyone, potentially someone impersonating friends. So, sounds like her acct was hacked (if this is how, she isn't as smart as I gave her credit for) and they're trying to hack her contacts?

They do that all over my neighborhood yet I've seen cats walk right by them on multiple occasions so no idea why anyone thinks it's effective.
