So, Wales out to South Africa . They can hold their heads high though. A great game and a huge effort but it's hard to say it was an unfair result. South Africa were very very good. Puts Japan's achievement into even sharper focus.

France thrashed by New Zealand. Not sure if this was just the well known temperamental shenanigans or whether there is a bit of a crisis in the way rugby is being coached and played in France these days. The game has moved on and France look a bit dated in their game plan now.

The Wales game was great entertainment, evenly matched teams and down to the slimmest of differences.

France New Zealand was a disappointment, though people are raving about how great the Kiwis were on the Groaniad, calling it a masterclass. Rumour has it the French camp was is in disarray, the players had sacked their coach, doesn't really make for entertainment from a neutral perspective.

The way they are playing the Kiwis should win this cup, I think it will come down to them keeping their nerve when they hit stiffer opposition.

I ended up staying up to watch that, thought the sin binning was harsh and couldn't understand why it was a penalty and not a scrum at the end. The ball was slippery and flying around in broken play, knock on was the obvious call, catching the ball in an offside position was a big call to make when it effectively gave Australia the match.

A typo surely. Predictably, NZ vs The DOCs. Can't help feeling Australia have been more than a bit lucky a couple of times though so predictably NZ will prevail. They are very very good.

And yes, Argentina and Japan were the highlights as far as sheer entertainment goes.

As an honest question, why on earth does the tournament itself take so long? Is it simply the wear and tear on the players from each match? I could see that if that's the reason, just curious.

It gives them time for a manicure, all that grappling in the scrum does terrible things to the nails.

Seems reasonable. The bad facial hair choices aside many of them do seem quite metrosexual, and without proper nails they could never pull off those new clingy uniforms.

Jonah Lomu died today at age 40. Sad news. He almost made rugby interesting all by himself: a hell of an athlete, and quite a nice human too, it seems. RIP

Yeah, met a Kiwi buddy this evening, he was nearly in tears when I mentioned Lomu's passing.

Great player, very smart, unlike most big players he worked out people who where braced for impact were too tense to react, so half the time he ran around them instead.

He had some rare kidney disorder, which suggests a more complex issue than a pocket anthropologist can accommodate. I don't disagree that the human body might have limits of size and carrying capacity, but that is not what happened to Jonah Lomu AFAIK.
