Sunglasses, piercings, non-black hair, clone army

Postby matsuki » Sat Oct 31, 2015 10:45 am

So the past few days I've been managing/interpreting/herding foreign media/drivers for a major J-car company. Basically doing test drives, burnouts, launching the more capable cars. The hilarity started when I saw that we were to assign each individual a number and there was some insanely tight schedule as to the order each of them would be in each vehicle. I asked if each individual would have a copy of the schedule or we had a list of names with the numbers....nope. :wall: I don't think that would have been good with Japanese, let alone groups of foreigners but I was told "no time for that/unnecessary." After only 10 minutes the chaos began with a few people "no, don want to drive dat car! Skip me!" Since the cars were lined up, that meant we needed to move the non-driven cars out of the way...and of course there would be the random guy in the the restroom, group of people having coffee "later...later." Even with a mic that blasted my voice everywhere, people would disappear. Sure enough, people would change their mind or want to drive the same car again. Needless to say but that type of robotic, micromanaged, inflexible, scheduling simply doesn't work well for this type of thing. There was even a TV crew that got denied some footage because...mendokusai? I don't really know the meaning of teeth sucking and muzukashii when you're ahead of schedule and it's an extremely reasonable request from media that traveled across the globe for you. I don't know if they'll listen but I gave them some ideas for the next event.

Anyhow, to the point of the thread. I wasn't given the lecture (maybe cause I was dragged in at the last minute or simply not Japanese) but the J-people working with me were complaining about all the shit they had to do to get the work. They wanted sunglasses after seeing me wearing them :cool2: ...but were apparently told it's not allowed...while running around on a live racetrack in the blinding sun :wall: WTF? Because Japaneeeeeze. Several of the girls (and a guy too, TIJ) were complaining they had to dye their hair black and remove her earnings. Because Japaneeeeeze? I totally get the need to look professional and like a team....we had matching uniforms as it was....but WTF is the fixation on the black hair clone army? I don't have any piercings so while it doesn't affect me directly, thought it was pretty odd they told the chicks not to wear any earrings? We had friggin Indians and Brazilians with all kinds of crazy piercings show up as guests. Sunglasses, never got any explanation besides "you're gaijin so it's ok" but WTF is that about? Keep in mind ALL the guests we had were all foreigners...

Most likely the same reason I had to shave for a work project which actually involved a lot of customers who already knew me from a related project, almost all of whom asked what had happened to the beard and why.

No, for the fiftieth time, it was not shitsuren, for God's sake.

The reason (of course not relayed in these terms to the customers) was that the organisation arranging the project had thirty years ago copied a boilerplate list of regulations from somewhere or other which included such ancient thinking about what will offend a customer in a customer service situation. And the managers of the project are too spineless to ask the top brass about revising them. I know for a fact that the top brass would be fine with facial hair in a customer service role, since I know of a prominent person in a sister project, but middle management are either scared to take initiative, or too scared to bother the top brass with the issue. Changing the rules is too low a priority to get around to carrying it out but being a stickler for the rules is easy to continue.

In many ways it is symptomatic of failing management in other areas. I participated in the project multiple times, each time with a dampatsushiki, but eventually there were similar management inflexibilities that made participation not worth even getting the razor out from the far reaches of the bathroom cabinet.

No sunglasses driving in october !? Good fucking luck seeing anything. The only way to spot trucks is when you reach their shadows zone in the last meter before their bumpers...

Pretty much my stance. Was a closed track so no trucks...but we're talking cones here and there in the pits, not k-rails. Totally foreseeable some clueless fuck comes in the wrong way or some staff dude is blinded by the sun and steps in front of an incoming car. So yeah, ridicules situation. I dunno if they view the sunglasses as unprofessional looking, accessory rather than necessity, or what...but I wouldn't have taken mine off if they had asked. They didn't though (gaijin privelage?) but don't see why this shit is even an issue. We're outside in the fucking sun....with almost 20 cars coming in here and there.

Well, for sure, I wouldn't like my personnel look like this.

Makes sense...too mendokusai to bother with any additional effort/responsibility. Every time there was a discussion of anything or call for questions, I feel like the loud gaijin for having any opinion/questions at all. (where all the J dudes sit back, quiet....and wait for orders) I feel like a newb in Japan again since I've been in charge of myself for most of the years here...but I guess some things never change.

I guess it's more of a 「WTF?!!」 issue for me, because I've done similar work and worked at the track on and off the past 18 years or so...sunglasses are not accessories, they prevent vision impairment and will prevent debris from blowing/being blasted in to your eyes.

Russell wrote:Well, for sure, I wouldn't like my personnel look like this.

Neither would I....but I meant something simple like one earring per ear. I still find it weird that many J-girls think they'll "lose their fortune" if they pierce their ears. (or it will make their mama cry if they put holes in their body)

You did use the plural form correctly in this sentence...

My post was not about lecturing you on your grammer, but rather that he could work two at the same time...

Oh well, you meant that scissoring?

I thought you referred to cutting up the man's tongue a little more.

Beautifully put. Magical, actually.

Is nobody else not more worried about this idea of Choko being an interpreter? That's like putting Charlie Chaplin in charge of explaining National Socialism.

Worse yet, I was thrown in front of a room and had to give presentations as well....with zero preparation. "We have powerpoint slides...in English! no problem for you!!"

To be honest, it's a bit nerve racking because you're supposed to be doing everything you can to ensure their safety on the track...and 90% of the Chinese guests were stuck up cunts that acted like I was talking down to them when I asked if they had ever driven a ******* before and tried to make sure they knew the unusual features of the vehicle. (there are a few)

Nearly every Chinese driver:

Me: So are you going to drive in auto or manual mode?
Driver: Yeah yeah, ok ok!

:???:

Me: Can you please release the parking brake?
Driver: Yeah yeah, ok ok! (just sits there)

They're Chinese - anyone who works with an average Chinese person would absolutely expect this. Chinese that have lived for a while in Japan are usually okay, but some of them still have the attitude (they're the ones that usually have to go back within a few years).

Some of my friends run airbnb and the stories they have are interesting, to say the least. Apparently people from each area (including North Americans) have issues - for Chinese it's that they just don't listen and they try to sneak extra people in (as in "this is my friend who we didn't mention and she's only staying for 3 of the 5 days"). Some Chinese woman got pissed when my friends kept the deposit for her smoking in the room.
