maybe we should merge with the car thread but..........

I got into a conversation with a man from a Japanese auto company. We got to the topic of "design by committee".

His question was " what's wrong with that?"
My answer was "you end up with kei cars with six cameras to show you where you are going."
Him: "isn't it safer?"
Me: "If you need six cameras to drive a kei, you shouldn't be driving."
Him: "good point"

A while ago I got into a conversation with the same people about the US classic car market. They couldn't believe that it was a multi billion dollar industry. They also were very surprised that most people in the US do the work at home on their own. Back here in Japan there are millions of kei cars with DAD stick on products and stickers. It's basically autobacs selling the most profitable crap. I have been in many arguments with the cunts there over their insane prices. They always tell me "you can't do it!".

I have a lift, air system and all the tools..... not many locals do.

DAD is just a chinese attempt at branding a lineup of random automotive related turds... It's the car versionof the Elecom syndrome

as for design by committee... The all around view monitors is ususally just a 'lineup spread' of the tech. Plus exterior visibility have no link with the car size. Rolling coffins like the Copen or S660 need all the help they can have.
Existence of the Skyline SUV is a more painfull example...

The F35 also has six cameras to monitor its surroundings.

If you want to go anywhere, buy a truck.
If you want yo go anywhere with 7 kids, buy a truck based SUV
if you want to go anywhere with a car, buy a subaru.
if you want to pretend like you can go anywhere, buy a crossover.

The murano, juke and skyline crossover are for people that don't have a clue. Crossovers are the biggest scam in the auto industry, a "suv" that is cheaper to develop than an SUV.

Historically... Todays crossovers are the new wave of the cheapest euro workhorse of the 50'-60'.
Those were low power low cost cars with aweseome ground clearance and favored by farmers.

The Renault 4L was one of those:

She later gave birth to the more specific Renault Rodeo 4 and 5. Favored by the army and hippies...

Friend at college had one. Had a very clever space saving and effective gearstick poking out of the dashboard as I remember. Push and pull, left and right. Very little movement needed and a very positive and direct action.

Izzat right or am I thinking of another car?

The successor was seriously cute as I remember but not nearly as bullet proof and (for its size) amazingly spacious.

Where we at college together? I loved my 1962 Quatrelle, drove it into the ground.

And yes, you could change gears without taking your hand off the steering wheel. Hang on tight as you go around a corner!!!

yes, the Renault 4L, Renault 18 and Renault 20 were hand converted to 4wd by the Marreau brothers. They just took a van rear axle and weld it to some springs in the back then linked with a gearbox made usually by simpar. But there was no tunnel for the driveshaft so they usually relocated the exhaust and sort of used its tunnel for the driveshaft. All these cars have been restored and are now property of the Renault historical collection.

The stock exhaust pipe route was equally French ideosyncratic. Into the front left (I seem to remember) wheel well where there was a trianglar prism muffler, and then a pipe under the doorsills with the outlet just in front of the back tyre. Of course as the cars got older there was no way you could find replacement parts and everyone had to get inventive.

Vladimir Putin’s massive, triple-decker war room revealed

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin, fifth from right, with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, sixth from right, and armed forces Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, fourth from right, attend a meeting on Russian air force activity in Syria at the national defense control center in Moscow on Nov. 17.

"Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the war room!"

It could have been a scene straight out of "Dr. Strangelove" when President Vladimir V. Putin stepped into the Russian Ministry of Defense's brand new, three-tiered, multibillion-dollar control center this week, for a war briefing that had its fair share of movie-like pageantry.

The fortified National Control Defense Center was Putin's first stop after officials confirmed that the Russian charter jet crash that claimed 224 lives last month was the result of an act of terror.

On movie-theater-size screens, live broadcasts showed long-range strategic bombers taking off from Russian air bases to fly sorties over Syria. Putin instructed commanders in Syria to "make contact with the French and work with them as allies" as Russia seeks a central role in a proposed anti-terrorist coalition.

But the real star of the show may have been the building itself, which is designed to be a new nerve center for the Russian military that will coordinate military action around the world, including ballistic missile launches and strategic nuclear deployments.

The building is roughly the equivalent of the U.S. National Military Command Center used by the Pentagon, but as one Russian state news agency noted in a breathless headline this week, "Russian Defense Data Center Outperforms US Facility Threefold: Official."

The center, which is fortified and said to sit on top of a maze of underground tunnels, is on the Frunze Naberezhnaya on the left bank of the Moscow river, a little over two miles from Red Square.

It was finished in 2014 and is part of a massive, decade-long modernization of Russia's army, which has cost hundreds of billions of dollars, but has also produced noted improvements, from the expertise of Russian troops deployed during the Crimea operation to the recent cruise missile strikes launched from the Caspian Sea.

The new national defense center also includes a helicopter pad that was deployed on the Moscow River late last year and can accommodate Russia's Mi-8 transport helicopter. In case of a war, it would be the country's premier communications center, and one Russian commander compared it to the military headquarters of the Soviet Union during World War II.
