Insurance as a social good (insurance either compelled and regulated by, or run by, the state), and insurance as a business proposition by insurance companies, are two different things and should be regarded separately. About the only social good involved in the second type is a) preventing the unlucky from being bankrupted due to an accident they caused, and b) preventing the other unlucky from being only partially compensated because the party liable for the accident has insufficient assets. Otherwise, that second type is nothing more than a gamble on the part of the insurance company and the insured. Each is saying to the other "do you feel lucky, punk?" It is reasonable in my view for the insurance company to use their experience/statistics to fine tune premiums to allow for greater risks.

Thanks for digging those graphs up Yoko but I already had Wags in the back of my head whispering "goooooogle gooooooooooooogle" so no, it wasn't just me being lazy. I couldn't find something that was "per X number of km driven" like Wage Slave suggested though.

On the bright side:

My "walking dead" theory is pretty supported by this. They're dangerous on the road, whether behind the wheel, on a chari, or doing the zombie-walk through traffic.

Maybe but old people can die from slipping in the bath so I could also reflect that accidents are more likely to kill senior citizens.

Which...is exactly what I'm saying? (though that graph is specifically for auto-related accidents)

No, not really. I'm saying that an accident that wouldn't kill a 25 year old for example might take out an 80 year old. The same way you might survive a fall down the stairs that my friend's 96 year old grandmother wouldn't.

Fair enough...but my friend's grandmother just did the opposite.

Anyhow, anecdotal as it is, 95% of the human pylons on the road I almost hit are jiji/baba...the other 5% being schoolgirls that have that "behind me no care, only worry about what's coming up!" approach to riding their chari on the road.

OK, I take it back...sometimes they don't care what's in front either. I forgot about the one who rode straight through a stop sign in front of me and then ate shit into a wall as I braked/honked. Hopefully, she learned something from that encounter. (but most likely not)

Man dies during shopping trolley ride reaching 80mph through Sydney

A man has died and another been critically injured after the shopping trolley they were riding crashed into a car as they reached 80 miles per hour in Sydney.

The unnamed men, both 28 years old and originally from Sweden, are believed to have ridden the trolley down Coogee Bay Road, Randwick, in the Australian capital at around 12.20am on Tuesday.

Sydney police said the accident occurred after the men found the abandoned trolley, deciding to ride it – with one on the back and the other inside it – until they crossed to the wrong side of the road and struck the vehicle.

"The estimate is that the men were travelling about 80km/h in the trolley, so they had certainly gathered some speed," Chief Inspector Chris Stiles told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Both men were treated at the scene, first by the 45-year-old motorist (who was not hurt in the crash) and a passing cyclist, and then by police and paramedics. One of the men died on the scene, while the second was taken to the Prince of Wales hospital where he remains.

"It sounds like they might have had a bit of fun together, resulting in this terrible incident," the chief inspector added.

Local reports indicate the first man had been studying and working in Australia, until he was joined by his friend roughly a week ago. Officers are continuing to investigate the crash.

Some confusion whether it was 80 km/h or 80 mph, but anyway way too fast for a shopping trolley me thinks. How they got that fast is a mystery to me. A shopping trolley doesn't look very stable to me at even much lower speeds.

And since when is Sydney the capital of Australia? Melbourne won't be pleased.

It's got to be KPH, right? I can't imagine they could get up to 80 MPH on a shopping cart no matter how steep the hill was.

Well the police said 80 kph and the Independent said 80 mph. I think I believe the police.

This guy claims 90kph on a "super steep" hill, so those are the likely units.

Someone else is claiming 70mph.

I have a feeling a shopping cart would probably start breaking apart around 80kph...

Or Canberra!

But yeah, the True Capital of Oz is clearly Melbourne.

But wait, these guys are originally from Sweden! Now it all makes sense.

I think a shopping trolley becomes more stable when there is that amount of weight in it. But those southern hemisphere folk are crazy: riding a wheelie bin down the street. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... tid=174602

And they keep doing it http://www.3news.co.nz/nznews/dunedin-c ... 2009111617 Chilly bin = cooler box

Seems I got my first experience of "oh fuck, sorry officer, I meant to use the brake pedal, honest". Yep, old woman, well she looks old, license says shes only 8 years older than me, hang on, that means.....
Right outside a koban too, and it took me 5 minutes to get those fuckers off their butts because it was raining. She shot straight out of a car park, then proceeded to spend 15 minutes on her phone, ignoring cops request to answer questions. All for the purpose of getting her story right I suspect.
Her front bumper is trashed, cops told me she was 100% in the wrong, but that's today....

She's lucky she wasn't dealing with American cops. They probably would have shot her and claimed they thought her cell phone was a deadly weapon.
