Buying RAM in Tokyo?

Postby Caustic Saint » Thu Dec 18, 2003 10:36 am

Anybody have any experience picking up laptop memory in Tokyo? I'm sure Akihabara is the area to look in, but how are the prices?

Specifically, I'll be looking for a 512MB or 1GB DDR266 DIMM. Right now they go for around $119 or $429, respectively, in the US. Any comparison to J-prices?

I went to SofMap in Shinjuku late last year and looked at 512MB chips. I then looked on EBAY and found the same chip for half the price (about US $100). So I ordered it through the company that posted it on EBAY. No problem, well until I tried to remove the covering plate on my iBOOK to install the sucker.

SofMap is dead weird. Most of their stuff is second hand and is sold at 80% of the original value at the time they got it. So the prices dont reflect the true market. They cant reduce the price as they bought it second hand and would create a huge loss.

Stay out of akihabara all together its a tourist trap. Even for Japanese tourists. If you work in a big eletronics/computer/high tech compang just put a note on the notice board as most people have home pc's some geek will want to upgrade themselves. You may even get free computer stuff.

But aside from that I know that there are a few cheep laptop vendors in aki but you really have to into hte backstreets.

If looking for monitors the best place is NEC first point in aki. Its near the station easy to see. I got a 17" almost new crt for about $20 because it didnt support 800X600 at 70hz what a bargin i never even use 800x600 anyway

I just realized I spec'ed the RAM wrong. It should read: 12MB or 1GB DDR266 SO-DIMM.

Oops.

I may check out Bic Camera, since they're usually well-stocked on Apple stuff and tend to not gouge like Apple does for memory.

12mb are you sure its a bit of a legasy device. I would probably cost more than 1gb as it would be hard to source.
