G-men?WTF did I just watch?

Postby matsuki » Tue Dec 01, 2015 5:33 pm

Not the gay magazine....sorry SJ

So last night while I was cooking, the grrl turned on the TV and this PI-like TV show came on. It was portraying the plight of an innocent apartment building owner, renting out the apartments through a fudoyasan.

They first shocked you with him, despite his protest of it being against his "renting rules" to rent to gaijin (language barrier excuse thrown in for good measure) him renting out a unit to two "gaikokujin" (They did mention the "gaikokujin" names at one point but after that it was just "gaikokujin." Spanish names and Spanish speaking in the reenactment..and one had a Japanese last name so who knows though??) who supposedly lived/worked here and spoke Japanese according to the fudosan. The "gaikokujin" consisted of one who immediately proceeded to spray paint the walls and another who used a sledge hammer on the shoji...and then stopped paying rent. The fat fuck "G-man" (they emphasized how tubby he was by always showing him eating...because Japan?) was called in when they were making noise all night. The solution was to knock on the door everyday and hand them the "rules" (while secretly recording the conversation....is that even legal here? harassment much?) The best part was the first rule sheet being angrily rejected by the feral "gaijkokuin" in Spanish because they couldn't read Japanese...but then the oyasan handed the "gaikokujin" a copy of the rules in "gaikokugo" (It was in English  ) After doing this for awhile, the police were called in to politely ask the "gaikokujin" to stop. (please follow the rules thank you  )

At this point I'm laughing my ass off at the terrible acting in the reenactment, the "bad gaikokujin," and overall story. It sounds like an over exaggerated or simply made up story to reinforce the "don't rent to foreigners" mindset.

Then they go through a similar situation with another renter in the same apartment (not known simply as "Nihonjin," they actually used his name but they did make him pretty feral as well) who was piling up all his trash bags in the hallway. The "G-man" used the fire department to ask him to stop after documenting the mess. Eventually, they tie the whole story together with it being a scheme by the fudoyasan to run the oyasan into the red (and drive him nuts) and force him to sell the property at a shitty price. The "G-man" finds a bank transfer receipt from he fudoyasan (furikomi?? what an amateur!) in the trash-filled and now abandoned feral "gaikokujin" apartment and with that "proof" the police go and arrest the fudoyasan. (and they have to show a closing scene of the G-man chowing down on some more food) Now obviously the main story was about the fudoyasan trying to fuck over the property owner using asshole renters and such but why the stretch to include "bad gaijin" in the plot when the only thing their supposed furrinness added to the plot was to portray the G-man as being prepared with a rule sheet in (the wrong)"gaikokugo?"

I heard that O'Reilly on Foxnews say bad things aboot Mexicans...

How scary it is to realize that there's enough morons like Takechimp to monetize on TV show that just fling shit at a brain dead racist audience... and they gobble it like christmass cake...

The fewer working brain cells someone has, the easier it is to milk a buck out of them. Racists and the elderly are easy prey.

This is the sort of thing that would give Debito a kniption fit.

It really is annoying though, and it does illustration a basic underlying contempt for "outsiders."

Another one that had me power-facepalming not long ago was a news spot on a "safety" event that the the police had held for pre-schoolers or first-graders or thereabouts, where they had somehow roped a black guy into playing the role of child-abductor/molester, using him in little play situations to teach the kids to be wary of such evil people.

I can't believe that nobody noticed the racist implications, and the fact that they were basically teaching impressionable kiddies to be wary of black people. But of course if you had called them on it they would have denied any and all racial motivation. And even more to the point, what foreigner in his or her right mind would even agree to such an idiotic thing? Maybe they had something on the guy and he had no choice, but boy, was my face sore.

I don't think the intent was to be racist but it's definitely catering to the usual, casual, distasteful poo mindset...the whole "not sabetsu, it's kubetsu" mentality....but on TV? They obviously don't see a "no gaijin policy" as a problem. Going out of the way to point out two individuals are "Gaikokujin" who speak "Gaikokugo" is fine if it actually matters to the story but here it obviously doesn't and they don't even seem to be sure of the nationality, language, or to bother using their names. They made the effort to use gaikokujin instead of gaijin though! Don't get me wrong though, I'm not trying to go full on debito here, just "face palming" it as a another public reassurance of the shimaguni complex.

That's a very strange one. If there is a foreign crime problem in Japan beyond immigration violations, it's things like prostitution and drug dealing in certain areas of major cities (Roppongi, Kabukicho, etc.). However, child abduction is definitely a local problem. Not only does that exercise possibly make kids afraid of black people, it might also not teach them who they should actually be wary of: Japanese men. That's not a dig at Japanese men by the way. That's just the reality given the demographics of this country.

One basic safety rule that gets violated here pretty regularly is sending kids to and from school wearing name tags. One thing I used to see all the time on shows in the US about child safety is never send your kids out wearing anything with their name on it because creeps can use that to pretend they know a kid and establish trust. "Hey, Taro-kun. Remember me? I'm friends with your mommy. Let me give you a ride home."

That makes very good sense.
But of course you'd actually have to think to figure that one out.

Let's take bets: if and when the economy picks up again these niggling paranoias and lashing out behaviours that have resurfaced in the past few years will fade.

Agree or disagree?

FTR, I despise pyschologising about social issues, but the rise in these sorts of venting activities over the past few years makes it rather enjoyable.

BTW, I just got the "How Lucky You are to be travelling here, because Japanese are kind 'even to foreigners like you', and much kinder to visitors than anywhere else". I caught myself almost about to ask if he had ever been abroad.

I knew someone who worked for either Yomiuri or Asahi TV a few (6 or so) years ago - I got asked to introduce foreigners for a TV show (about foreigners). Guidelines (which weren't written on the information sheet about the show) were that people who had been in Japan too long, bitter people, people who were good at Japanese, and Asians were not going to be on the show. After that I can completely see this show being racist.
