Japan mountaineer Kei Taniguchi dies in fall while climbing

Mountaineer Kei Taniguchi died in an accident this week while climbing in the snowy Daisetsuzan range in northern Japan's Hokkaido. She was 43.

Taniguchi, who climbed Mount Everest in 2007, became the first woman to win the prestigious Piolet d'Or (Golden Ice Axe) mountaineering award in 2009. A friend and fellow climber, Hiroshi Hagiwara, said Friday that she fell while taking a break on 1,984 meter (6,510 foot)-high Kurodake as she and four companions were descending the peak.

"It's a great loss for our community. I had climbed with her in the past," said Hagiwara, an editor at Yamakei magazine.

Taniguchi had detached herself from the rope she and fellow climbers were using, and went behind a boulder. The group found her gloves and traces of her having fallen. She was confirmed dead Tuesday.

When he bit one of the wires, the resultant electric shock killed him. Another convicted murderer, Laurence Baker in Pittsburgh, was electrocuted while listening to the television on home-made earphones while sitting on a metal toilet.

Though he later enjoyed a mild rehabilitation when he contributed to a BBC QI panel, thereby resulting in Pointzzzzzz! for one of the panelists.

Still, Taniguchi will no doubt be remembered and honoured even with this stain on her record.

...Taniguchi climbed the north ridge of Kurodake (1,984m), on Hokkaido, with four male companions, reaching the summit at 2pm.
At that point she needed to go to the loo, so untied from the rope and went down behind a big boulder.
When, several minutes later, she hadn't returned, the rest of the team went to investigate and discovered her rucksack, both ice tools, and a pair of gloves.
Investigating the north face they saw slide marks, so continued down, roped, for several hundred metres. Unfortunately, they could not locate her.

No Japanese on that list, which brought back some memories of an excursion I made a decade or so ago to a ninja village, where they told an interesting story.

One of the more enduring stories about a ninja assassination is the death of Uesugi Kenshin in 1578, whose death has been a hotly debated topic for centuries. Modern scholars insist Kenshin was killed by a combination of stomach cancer and not possibly shitting himself so hard his heart exploded, whereas the winds of history have always carried rumors that maybe, just maybe, Kenshin’s death was more awesome than his peers let people believe.

The story goes that an unnamed ninja assassin made their way into Kenhin’s home and true to their ninja training, sought to attack him when he most vulnerable, in other words, when he was taking a dump and they had a clean-ish shot at his internal organs in the smelliest and directest way possible. To do this the shadow assassin snuck into his sewage pit and lay in wait with a spear (some sources say a sword), patiently waiting for a poopy brown target to present itself.

When Kenshin entered the bathroom to relieve himself using a weird Japanese custom we’re too scared to search for on Google, the assassin plunged the weapon right into his butthole, causing him severe internal injuries that outright killed Kenshin several days later. Although we can’t imagine a cooler thing to write on a tombstone than “stabbed to death by a f*****g ninja on the toilet”, Kenshin’s peers supposedly denied the involvement of any of Scorpion’s cousins. Which is weird, since they still mentioned him taking a turn for the worse on the toilet, which only raises more questions than it answers. Why mention Kenshin being on the toilet if he wasn’t attacked by a ninja on it!? Come on, Japan.
