Gambling help Japan's elderly stay sharp
---Japanese senior centers increasingly adding gaming machines and tables
---Some research suggests gambling may stave off dementia

CNN | December 24, 2015
It might be a long way from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas or Macau, but old people's homes may quickly be becoming a new frontier for gaming in Japan.
In one senior day care center in Yokohama -- appropriately named after the aforementioned U.S. gambling mecca -- elderly people play mahjong and baccarat as the chimes and pings of slot machines and pachinko fill the room.
"We believe this casino stimulates the brain and helps to prevent or suppress the development of dementia," said Kaoru Mori, Chairman of Japan Elderly Care Service, which runs the "Las Vegas" center.

Well, Elderly gambling does reduce arteriosclerosis in the vital pachiko and maj jong industries. Besides, if they don't blow their money it's just going to end up in a sock drawer waiting for the next natural disaster to wipe it out.

the expenses by over-60-year-old elderly account for approx the half of the total consumer spending in japan.

actually i recently almost dont buy anything except for living necessities and even stopped buying books and instead borrow it in library, which had been occupied most of my amusement expenses since my college days.

Hmm, been playing Blockout regularly since it came out back in the eighties. Not seeing much benefit for my dementia, though. Maybe I should play more Solitaire for its superior intellectual value?

Well...

Strict rules against betting outside of strictly defined venues in Japan mean that no real money exchanges hands in the Yokohama center -- instead seniors use fake bills and compete for prizes.

I can see the benefit of card games and such that actually require some thinking...pachinko or slot machines? WTF?
