JR Line services one rider in Hokkaido

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sun Jan 10, 2016 8:41 pm

Japan Keeps This Defunct Train Station Running for Just One Passenger

For years, there’s only been one passenger waiting at the Kami-Shirataki train station in the northernmost island of Hokkaido, Japan: A high-school girl, on her way to class. The train stops there only twice a day—once to pick up the girl and again to drop her off after the school day is over.

It sounds like a Hayao Miyazaki film. But according to CCTV News, it was a decision that Japan Railways—the group that operates the country’s railway network—made more than three years ago.

At that time, ridership at the Kami-Shirataki station had dramatically fallen because of its remote location, and freight service had ended there as well. Japan Railways was getting ready to shut the station down for good—until they noticed that it was still being used every day by the high-schooler. So they decided to keep the station open for her until she graduates. The company’s even adjusted the train’s timetable according to the girl’s schedule. The unnamed girl is expected to graduate this March, which is when the station will finally be closed.

Remote Hokkaido train station stays open for one high school girl? Perhaps not
The girl featured in the story does take the train every day, but the year-three student takes it from Kyu-Shirataki Station, instead of the Kami-Shirataki Station, along with more than 10 schoolmates at 7.15am. That is the only train in the morning.

On their way home, they have a choice of three trains, with one as late as 7.25pm.

...Japan Railways, as part of an effort to rationalise its operations, will close three underused stations - Kami-Shirataki, Kyu-Shirataki and Shimo-Shirataki stations by March 2016.

I hope for her that she does not fail her graduation...

The poor schoolgirl is now inundated with amateur cameramen taking photos of her at the station on the way to school, asking her to turn to face a little more to the left or to stand a little more like this.... Particularly galling as this is an unmanned station so nobody is there to tell the photographers to pull their heads in and think about what they are doing interfering with a member of the general public going about their everyday life.

There has been an increase in rubbish left at the station (remember, it is unmanned) and in graffiti since it appeared in the news, too.
