Poisoned is the only one worth using.

That said, be careful where you go with this topic if you don't want it deleted. The forum owner (bikkle) is very sensitive to discussions that may be seen as contributing to copyright infringement and/or intellectual property issues.

Also, you posted it in the wrong forum. Subjects like this (software) should go in Tokyo Tech.
More caustic. Less saint.

point(s) taken caustic.

P2P and server software are a means to an end. I think the controversy lies in the end. If I had asked gun owners what models they own should that post be pulled because guns are sometimes used for illegal purposes?

As a musician myself I bet that I'm even more sensitive to copyright infringement issues than the average joe. I happen to use the carracho server/client as a means to collaborate with other musicians around the world.

point taken?

Yeah, sensitive is an understatement.. he's down right wacko about it.

:D

Any way,
A new P2P app was released. It's called MUTE, and it is Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible. It is still in its infancy but the great thing about it is that it is secure. Not many P2P apps can claim that.. but mute does.

One thing about mute is it is in the alpha or pre alpha stages. It crashes often, but it looks to be one of the more promising.

I would give a link here, but because of a certain omnipresent martinet/autocrat, I won't.. You're welcome to PM me if you are interested in more information about Mute.

http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/howPrivacy.shtml

Read through that article carefully. It shows you exactly what MUTE is trying to accomplish. I am all for protection of copyrights, but there has got to be a point where privacy and the ability to exist on the net anonymously is a priority.

MUTE

Postby etrepum » Mon Dec 22, 2003 8:58 pm

Just because something says "secure" doesn't mean it is (though in this case, MUTE is open source, so its security can be audited by whoever wants to). Anyway, the big thing that mute seems to be pushing is anonymity -- which means that the RIAA shouldn't be able to track you down, and therefore can't sue you.

About Mute security, as I posted in the post above yours etrepum,

Encryption
Neighbor connections in the MUTE network are built on top of secure streams that use:

* RSA public/private keys (size selected by user at runtime) to exchange secret keys
* AES (Rijndael) 128-bit secret keys used in CFB mode with all-zero initialization vectors to encrypt stream data
* Separate AES keys used for each stream direction
* Fresh AES keys used each time a new stream is established

I'll revise my statement, MUTE is more secure than any other app I have seen that is a true P2P app.

Claims to be more secure. A bug somewhere or another could make all that crypto worthless. It does sound nice though, I'll have to look at the implementation sometime.
