How comfortable are traditional futons?

Postby John Dillinger » Sat Jan 23, 2016 4:34 pm

Hey guys, my apologies if I've asked this before, but I've a question for you. I'm thinking of getting a traditional futon mattress that can be folded up and put away. My question, is how comfortable are futons?

Comfort is very subjective, but I'd say they're fine when used on tatami, which is where they're supposed to be used. If you're going to be using it on a harder floor you'll probably need a pad as well, both for comfort and warmth, but of course then you have more stuff to lay out and put away every day.

Seconded.

And if you prefer a soft springy bed, then a futon is probably not for you.

the more important is pillow rather than mattress. my recommendation is an order-made buckwheat chaff pillow, which prevents you from stiff shoulders.

Agreed too. I found them perfectly comfortable from the off - never wanted anything else. I am not sure but think the tatami is more about insulation than softness. One of those thin shiny mat things does the same job for me on a wood floor. One thing I really like in winter is that if you use an electric blanket they seem to adsorb a lot of heat and then release it slowly after you turn the blanket off. Very nice.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I have no problem sleeping on a futon (better two on top of each other) now and then, but I wouldn't want to give up my bed for it permanently if I don't have to. It's something like a "possibly could make a fire rubbing two sticks for an hour, but a Bic lighter makes it so much easier" type of thing. And then there are my aching hips :)

Haven't used one of those in years but I agree, they can be nice, especially in summer.

Since a futon doesn't "conform" as much as a western mattress, getting that pillow height right can be important.

Pillows...

Your Pillow is Full of Bugs, Dead Skin, Dust Mites and Their Feces

Pillows are gross, science confirms. How gross, you ask? Well, according to a new study by British health care provider Barts and the London NHS Trust, "up to a third of the weight of your pillow could be made up of bugs, dead skin and house dust mites and their feces." Yeah, that gross. Researchers examined hundreds of used hospital pillows, discovering E. coli, respiratory and urinary tract infection-causing germs, and "more than one million Staphylococcus hominus per mililitre--the bug [that] can cause severe infections in people with immune systems." But Dr. Arthur Tucker, one of Barts and the London NHS Trust's principal scientists, told The Daily Mail that such hordes of bugs and bacteria are not limited to hospital beds. And Gabriel Scientific's technical director Duncan Bain went so far as declaring, "If you had to come up with a medium to cultivate bacteria, besides a Petri dish with agar [a gelatinous food], a pillow is pretty much as good as you can get." Now that is just nasty.

You like hard mattresses- go for one or 2 futons
You like them soft... Avoid.
Or you can put a true sleeper memory foam topper over your futons.
is there is floor level draft in that room... Can be sucky sucky... Unless you buy a tatami bed with drawer under.
With cats, be prepared to share and wake up with cat bughole up your nose.
No need for bedside table and you can have as much books around you as you see fit.
If your place have... Unwanted... Critters... I might also sucks to no end. Also no headboard for eating or reading in sitting position.

Heating is le boring too:
Fanless kerosene is ok for heat and killing you
Fan kerosene will wake you up every 3 hours unless you get an us /canada model
Oil electric are useless
Fan electric you have to love the noise
Ir / halogen electric... Unless you are hatching eggs or drying paint on plamodels/ body panels...

Like for studies telling me my car steering wheel have more bacteria than my shitter i'd tell those guys to shove their numbers up their asses and find an honest job like pimp of human organs traffiquants.
Hoomans have something called immunity system. That stuff need to be used and trained in order to work good. Plus good chance that the stuff on my pillow is part of my own ecosystem already.

Must disappoint you there. This is not Russia, but Japan, a western style democracy, where mere mortals don't get immunity. You must be rich or famous (as in Simpson/Jackson/Polanski) to get immunity or else you're left to die.

Which is another vote for the bed vs futon: You can leave your head outside the edge of the bed, while you sleep and then the fleas, lice and their feces and the dandruff an other nasty stuff conveniently fall on the floor, from where it can easily be vacuumed off in the morning. You'll stay alive.
