JR Tokyo Wide Pass

Sales begin on Thursday, November 19, 2015!
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen, limited express and other trains in the valid use area. The JR TOKYO Wide Pass makes it easy to visit popular tourist destinations such as Mt. Fuji, Izu and Karuizawa, GALA Yuzawa.

10,000 yen for adults, 5000 yen for children under 12.

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is available for purchase and use only by holders of non-Japanese passports.

I can't promise but I've heard that they don't restrict residents of Japan from using it like they do with the JR pass.

Is that really a deal if it's only Tokyo/Kanto-wide? Right before I actually moved here, I was with a company where the CEO was using all the company funds to pay for Korean hookers and to put us up in nice hotels in Shinagawa. Everyday we'd Shinknsen it to Yokohama to meet with suppliers....and that was something like 1,500ish each way. 3-Days, 9,000Yen...might save a couple 100yen for anything after work? I guess if you Do Nikko, Kamakura, and such, there might be some worthwhile savings?

You do realise that Shinagawa to Shinyokohama is only a tiny distance within Kanto, less than 20 Km. Note also that the fare does not cover Tokaido Shinkansen.

One trip Karuizawa return and you have already saved on the regular fare. It sounds like a good deal to me for those who use it.

Short distance but something on the shrinkage you would likely use everyday was my point. If it covers all the way to Karuizawa, that would definitely be worth it.

You didn't bother to check the map on the website before your first reply, did you? :wall:

To be fair, both Karuizawa and Yuzawa were mentioned in the text that The Jerk quoted in the OP as well, so I am not surprised you didn't realise they were included.

He does make a good point though. If it's cheaper to go to the place you're going buying a regular ticket, the pass isn't a good deal. I'm glad he cleared that up for us.

Guilty as charged (obviously)

But yeah, I used to have friends who were visiting me buy extra JR rail passes as those are a great deal if you plan on travelling far on the Shinkansen. Say, Osaka, Nagoya, etc. As with these, if you're just going to be staying in Tokyo, 10,000 for 3 days worth of rail travel isn't a deal.

Yeah, that's pretty interesting ... I would have missed it otherwise.

The two new passes for Tohoku and Niigata/Nagano that will be coming out this April both indicate they're available for non-resident foreign passport holders only:

Qualifications for purchase
The JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) is available for purchase by holders of non-Japanese passports with a visa to stay in Japan for no longer than 90 days. The passport is required for confirmation purposes at the time of purchase.

Qualifications for purchase
The JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area) is available for purchase by holders of non-Japanese passports with a visa to stay in Japan for no longer than 90 days. The passport is required for confirmation purposes at the time of purchase.

The Wide Pass site only says ...

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is available for purchase and use only by holders of non-Japanese passports.

Always carry your passport when purchasing or using the JR TOKYO Wide Pass for identification purposes.
Passport verification is required when purchasing.

And a friend of mine posted on FB that there's no restriction for foreign residents but I don't know if that was based on first-hand experience or something he heard.

I've bought passes that were restricted to non-residents in the past. 9 times out of 10, all they wanted to do was see a foreign passport...though I katakoto'd and f'ed up my Japanese for the fun of it. Watashi....gai...koku....passspoooto deshu. The only time it didn't work was a female counter agent...and all I did was walk to another kiosk and the man there issued the pass.
