USA infected with Mad Cow

Postby Big Booger » Wed Dec 24, 2003 10:10 am

The first case of mad cow disease in the United States has been discovered in Washington state, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday.

Two tests have already been carried out on the cow enabling Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman to call the case a "presumptive positive" and a sample is being flown to England for a third test to absolutely confirm the case.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, is linked to a similar form of the incurable and fatal brain-wasting disease in humans, called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or vCJD. There have been a small number of cases of vCJD reported worldwide, primarily in the United Kingdom, in people who ate BSE-contaminated meat.

Officials believe that meat from the Washington animal left a processing plant, Veneman said, and an investigation is under way to determine if any had reached store shelves.

This is funny....they just had a case of mad cow disease here in Japan about 3 weeks ago!!!

When I was in the US last, my wife was here and sent me a couple of beef curry packs.....US customs took it and destroyed it all!! In its place they sent a letter (we have destroyed these packages because we do not allow import of any beef products from the following countries...etc.)

Now I suppose if my father sends me some American beef jerky, Japan will destroy it.....

Both countries have recent mad cow disease cases....both countries say that their beef is safe....both wont allow import of each others beef. I guess one day soon all countries will have at least one mad cow disease case at one point and we will all just shut down trade. Every human being will die of mad cow disease in isolation!!!!

I wanna know why mad cow disease was all over England for about 8 years yet only 100 people have died because of this problem? I have a feeling this problem is as exaggerated as SARS.

Most of the problems with the beef industry are exaggerated not because of the health concerns of the citizens consuming the products but as a way to protect the beef industry in various countries without tarriffs etc.

Level playing fields and balances of trade are political minefields.

Will Japan open its markets to Canadian beef?

Postby canman » Wed Dec 24, 2003 4:15 pm

After the scare in Canada, Japan was very quick to close its markets to Canadian beef, and the US didn't really help, they caved in to Japan as well, not allowing Canadian beef to enter the US market. Well the shoes on the other foot now, I wonder where all the Yaki niku restaurants are going to get their beef from now. I guess this is an early Christmas present for Aussie beef producers. :)

Since that Mad Cow issue in Japan a couple years back,

I haven't been able to buy my favorite beef curry product at the local Japanese supermarket.

As far as customs snatching PRIVATE packages....they've never snatched any of mine coming from Japan that contained beef products.

I think it depends on where you live or the route the package is going that depends on whether or not they;ll open the package or not.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

could be....it was a huge box with a ton of shit in it, but they only took the beef curry packs.

I didnt even realize that they did it until she told me on the phone "arent you happy that I sent you 10 packs of your favorite curry?" and I had none in the box......I fumbled through the box and found a note instead telling me that the incinerated it.

I think they check packages in random order at customs too....like the airport. Makes you feel safe.

You'd think they know that doesn't work.

Incineration is ineffective in killing mad cow disease

holy cow!!! I didnt know that....

(this is an old article, but I am sure this info is pretty much the same)
http://www.veg.ca/newsletr/mayjun96/madcow.html
Prions are such 'quality' proteins that they will survive incineration at 360 degrees for one hour, irradiation, autoclaving (sterilizing under high heat and pressure), burial in the earth for at least three years, and also resist being broken down by some highly corrosive chemicals.

I wonder if you can get mad cow from breathing the ashes?? :?

Anything's possible.

Prions turn our dogma of what a life form is on its head. Unlike all other life forms they are virtually indestructible (as seen in these official UK Department of Health instructions). They are untouched by all traditional sterilization methods: bleach, strong acids, strong bases, formaldahyde, alcohol, autoclaving, freezing. Unbelievably, they retain infectivity even after incineration to ash form! (Brown P. Liberski PP. Wolff A. Gajdusek DC. "Resistance of scrapie infectivity to steam autoclaving after formaldehyde fixation and limited survival after ashing at 360 degrees C: practical and theoretical implications", Journal of Infectious Diseases. 161(3):467-72, 1990 Mar) So grilling that burger well done isn't going to kill this bug, not even if you marinate it in Drano(TM) first.

sounds like a lot of fun.....would be pretty easy to dump this crap in a few towns water supply......and with things like blood donors and using the same operating utensils it would spread to a lot more....

nobody would know they have it and in 10-30 years people would be dropping like flies!!!

yeah I know its a stupid theory, but possible.

anyway thanks for the link, was an interesting read.

Oz beef prices rise in Japan...

Does this mean we'll see a rise in the cost of a Big Mac here? Perhaps they'll need to raise the price for a Smile up from 0 yen!

Yes, but the Japanese are testing *every* cow that goes to slaughter.

The quality of testing is of course somewhat unknown -- as it is with every other country.

If you want to be a lot safer become vegan. Personally I love yakiniku too much to be able to pull that off, but...
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
