3 Japanese students killed in California car crash

Three Japanese college students were killed and five others were injured when the car they were in veered off a California freeway and struck a power pole, officials said Friday.

The eight students were trapped in the 2000 Honda Prelude after the crash late Thursday on state Route 78 in Oceanside, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The car went down an embankment and struck the pole, shearing it in half and leaving power lines dangling, Bettencourt said. The lines did not touch the ground.

The 19-year-old male driver and two passengers — a man and woman — were pronounced dead at the scene. Two women and three men suffered moderate to major injuries.

Eight people in a Honda Prelude? I thought the phone booth stuffing craze ended in the fifties.

Car buffs! Was the 2000 Honda Prelude the one with the seat recliner lever in the middle of the car rather than the outside edges, so that you could "whoops, slipped!" and send your passenger into a supine position for your ensuing mutual pleasure?

That's a lot of people in a Prelude but it's not that unusual for students to do that. Especially not broke Japanese ryugakusei.

From a year ago...but the video just released, despite claims that it was edited, still apparently shows the police car, speeding through residential streets, without lights on: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/que ... -1.1912506

Steve Vaccaro, the lawyer representing the family of slain pedestrian Ryo Oyamada, says that recently released video shows that the NYPD cruiser that struck and killed the 24-year-old likely did not have its emergency lights on, despite reported police claims. Vaccaro has brought a civil suit against the department that alleges it dispersed witnesses, failed to properly record evidence at the crime scene and tampered with one key witnesses account after Oyamada's death.

In Rio de Janeiro drivers don't use their headlights and don't stop at red lights at night due to a very reasonable fear of being car jacked. They give a quick flash of their headlights when they get close to an intersection which basically means get the fuck out of the way if you're a pedestrian. It made crossing the street drunk at night extra exciting.

Students killed in Seattle bus crash were from four countries

Four college students killed in the crash of their charter bus and an amphibious tour bus on a Seattle bridge were from Austria, China, Indonesia and Japan, their school said on Friday.

The dead were Claudia Derschmidt, 49, of Austria; Privando Putradanto, 18, of Indonesia; Mami Sato, 36, from Japan; and Runjie Song, a 17-year-old from China, North Seattle College said in a statement.

About 90 firefighters and medics responded to the scene of Thursday afternoon's head-on collision on the busy Aurora Bridge, and about 50 people were treated at hospitals, authorities said.

The college said several students remained in critical condition, and other students and a North employee sustained serious injuries.

The crash left the charter bus caved in with glass and debris on the ground, and the Ride the Ducks amphibious bus also crumpled and missing a front wheel.

Homeless man discovers body of Japanese female pannist

Japanese pannist Asami Nagakiya was last night identified as the masquerader found dead at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Homicide detectives were able to confirm her identity last night, having sought the public’s assistance earlier, after her body was found under a tree around 9.30 am.

Nagikiya and some of her friends have made headlines over the years as they traditionally visit T&T to play in the National Panorama competitions, including with former champions Phase II Pan Groove and PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, and partake of the Carnival festivities.

According to reports, Geoff Adams, of Tamana, was walking through the area when he noticed a homeless man screaming while pointing at a patch of bushes.

“The guy say he see something in the bushes. I say it was a manicou or iguana but when I look I see a bikini bottom,” Adams told reporters in a brief interview after being interrogated by police on the scene.

The grisly discovery was made mere metres away from Queen’s Royal College and the Maraval Road roundabout, as crews from the Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (Cepep) were busy cleaning up rubbish left over from Carnival celebrations.

She's one of the musicians in this performance.

It looks like she was strangled. People in T&T are angry at the mayor of Port-of-Spain for his comments.

There are now calls from the public to have Raymond Tim Kee removed as Mayor of Port-of-Spain.

Following statements of disapproval on social media, there is now an online petition and a public protest organised to have Tim Kee dismissed.

The public outrage stems from his statements about women being responsible with their bodies to ensure that they are not abused.

Tim Kee in a media conference at City Hall, Port-of-Spain, yesterday said: “I spoke of some of the things that I see women do, assisted by men, of course, but the woman has the responsibility that they ensure that they are not abused. You can enjoy Carnival without going through the routine.”

His comments followed the discovery of the body of a masquerader, later identified as Japanese pan player Asami Nagakiya. Autopsy results revealed that Nagakiya was strangled.

Well the the mayor resigned.

Raymond Tim Kee is no longer the Mayor of Trinidad and Tobago’s capital city.

A week after making controversial comments after the murder of a Japanese Asami Nagakiya, a Japanese pannist who visited the twin-island republic for Carnival, Tim Kee handed in the resignation that he had announced over the weekend he would submit.

The man who served as his deputy, Kieron Valentine, is the new mayor and will be sworn in soon.

“It was really a sad moment, an uncomfortable feeling to take over the mayorship under such circumstances, but in politics these things do happen and we are all saddened by it,” Valentine told reporters yesterday evening after a meeting of the Port of Spain City Council.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon after he tendered his resignation to the Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Spain Corporation, Tim Kee said he accepted full responsibility for his comments.

The mayor had been under severe pressure to quit since last Wednesday, when, in response to questions from reporters following the discovery of the 30-year-old’s body in the Queen’s Park Savannah, still clad in a Carnival costume, he reiterated comments he made prior to Carnival about the need for women to maintain their dignity during the festivities and ensure they are not abused.

“Public officials must be held to a high standard of transparency, good governance, and accountability and I accept full responsibility for making the reference that cast a shadow on the death of . . . Nagakiya,” his statement said, continuing with condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and countrymen.

As to your previous query in the subject line as to whether it was being reported in Japan, it does appear as a feed from Kyodo news, but they source it from the Grauniad and don't go to the effort of tracking down kanji for the name. https://www.sankei.com/world/news/18092 ... 02-n1.html

Or just a really crazed family? The cults creep me out too but the things we're hearing here seem more centered around how bizarre this international hikikomori family is.
