My main point is that Apple's lack of foresight has led them into this PR nightmare, which is starting to looking look like lose lose. Unlike computers, society is chaotic and messy, you can't just switch it off and switch it on again.

You mentioned they wouldn't help you with your colleague's phone. Multiply this by the number of iPhones they have sold and this tells you the potential cost of providing a back up plan other than 10 strikes and out for such eventualities. As coders they went for the simple technical solution, not the messy case by case human one.

Fundamentally it highlights a problem of a mass produced device becoming so central to people's lives. When they open that door in that illustration above they are going to find a herd of sheep.

I think the take out of this case is smartphones are basically a dumb idea if you care about your privacy and security. The only thing between someone and all that information is 4 numbers on a portable device which you leave on the table at Starbucks.
