my concern is which type of j-population was abstracted. probably its ainu or the one having high dense of jomon gene.

Take another look at that map....and consider the dna testing is more likely to have been done in Osaka, Tokyo, or across all of Japan...I'd guess it's quite the opposite.

...these genetic bits and pieces may no longer be helpful, and may even raise the risk of depression, heart disease, some skin conditions, allergies and other maladies.

Anyone notice that Neanderthal genes are not very common in Africa?

Just sayin'

Africa also has the greatest variation of DNA, suggesting a small group of early humans moved out of the continent and gradually spread across the world, mixing with the Neanderthals along the way, who were equipped to survive the ice age but didn't fare so well afterwards. Jury is out on whether we wiped them out, bred them out or just stood by and watched them die out.

If you aren't African you are a hybrid mutant.

The Few, the Proud, the Mongrels!!!!!!!!!! Themz iz Us.

Last I read the preferred explanation is that the Neanderthals were naturally de-selected, and any remnants or whatever were absorbed through intermarriage and assimilation. There does seem to be a new agreement that they weren't nearly as visually distinct as bad movies might suggest, so perhaps their fewer original numbers and lack of evolutionary success just led them to sort of fade to white? A while back I read a short article in one of them there paleoanthropology journals suggesting that the genocide theory is likely a misanthropology (aka Cat Lady Science), as most Neanderthal specimens show few signs of having being slaughtered.

5 bonus points if you know why they are called Neanderthals (without looking it up).

These days we should really spell the word "Neandertal".

Why is it Ne (Greek for "new") ander (Greek for "man") tal (German for "valley") when they found ancient man there?

Is there an answer other than that's the convoluted name they chose?

I'm confused now. Were you asking about the name of the valley or the species?

The valley was named neanderthal before they found the bones.

The bones were named neanderthal because that is where they found them.

My difficult question was why they went all wanky and used Greek.

I know the species was named after the valley though I never thought about the etymology of the place name. Do you mean why did they use Greek in naming the valley? I can't vouch for accuracy but Google tells me ...

The word "Neanderthaler" comes from the cave in the valley "Neanderthal".

The word "Neanderthal" comes from the word Tal=valley in old spelling and the name of Neander, a composer of church hymns who lived near this valley.

The name "Neander" was the Greek version of the Neander's original name "Neumann" (neu (german) =new ( english) = neo (Greek), mann (german) = man (english) = andr- (Greek) )

Good analysis, S.J.

And to give a general answer to Wagyl, most European languages are heavily influenced by Classic Greek and Latin, so it is not exactly surprising when the phrase "Neander" falls in line.

One thing I found out in looking that up is the English name Andrew and Scandinavian name Anders both come from the Greek Andreas which means "manly."

At least it was actually difficult, though why you even thought of thinking it is weird. Not unlike how we mangle German place and people names. Why is a large German city named after stinky French deodorant water? I dunno.

Anyways, yes, points go to SJ, with applause all around.

Fascinating, learn something new every day (about the etymology). Bit of a misnomer for an extinct species though.

There's another one named after an American minced beef-in-a-bun recipe, and one named after a kind of sausage.

Yeah, a bit weird they would name cities after American foods. Probably a legacy of the Cold Cuts War.......

They can call themselves lucky not to have named that place after the more generic term for this type of water...

When I was 8 or so, on the last day of school, before summer vacation, I remember making this dipshit that was bullying my friends think that his family secretly hated him and the bottle of nasty he had in his desk was nothing more than "scented toilet water." In typical child fashion, he refused to believe any of it in front of me at recess...then, after a good hard think during class, he smashed the bottle of stink threw quite an embarrassing fit. I was sure I was going to get dragged out of class but he didn't know my name and the two friends he had a class with played dumb....which angered him enough to kick his teacher and yeah. That must have been the best start to summer vacation for him ever!!!

The Germans are quite innocent in this.

No, take the Dutch, who named one of their towns after a certain breed of people in Japan...

If the definition of Havillisation is going deeper into the Japanese language corner of wikipedia, well yes, I am almost there but not yet a master.

Those who go downstairs to shops in the Ginza: are they completely Havillised, or are they just sukebe ningen?
