you obviously didnt read through this thread before you posted. You are probably the only person that lives in Japan that has introduced yourself.....as a matter of fact, I would go as far to say that the other "newbies" are all the same person taking the piss.

"New Members - Introduce Yourself"

Not "New to Japan - Introduce Yourself"

What's the problem? If the thread has turned to shit, doesn't mean it can't be revived to its original purpose.

yes i am a new member, as well as new to japan

Postby damaged » Thu Dec 25, 2003 9:04 pm

ok, i'm steven. new member. new to tokyo. new to FG. and fucked.

last weekend was the 'santa rampage' -- 20 foreign santas coming to shibuya , all drinking jim beam starting at noon, in full costume, doing conga lines down Takeshitadori, bum-rushing the burusera shop, getting in bad situations.

the week before that was a catfight in shinjuku. Fried Egg Battle. two strong women, 100 fried eggs, several kilos of raw eggs, lots of plastic sheeting. fucked enough?

you might see me in Kappabashi-dori buying plastic food, or at the Robot Convention at tokyo big sight, trying to nanpa the Actroid (the first android secretary) , or at a hardcore show, using my head as a landing pad for stagedivers.

those events and more are in TOKYO DAMAGE REPORT. that's right, this is a plug. the url is in my signature down there.

i update every day with words and pictures. best of all, it's NOT ABOUT ME or my stupid life . it's just about tokyo, and the absurdly weird cross cultural stuff that occurs here.

hi

Postby tomorris » Sat Jan 03, 2004 6:10 am

Hi,
My name is Tom. I am a senior in college and I live outside of Chicago. I will soon be f*cked because I am trying to get a job at an eikaiwa in Tokyo.
So far, I have applied to ECC, because it seems like the best deal. For housing, I am friends with a few Japanese people who live in Tokyo, so they are going to help me with that, I might live with one of them, not totally sure.
Anyways, I wanted to go early and do an intensive Japanese language course in Tokyo over the summer.... does anyone have any suggestions? Also, any tips for my interview w/ ECC?
I'm not going to move to Japan for good, probably 1-2 years.... I've been there before, but only for 2 weeks....however I'm an East Asian History major and Asian studies minor so I am pretty familiar with some things...... I've also been studying Japanese for about 5 months now.... any help would be greatly appreciated, cuz I'll be a gaijin soon.... thanks!

Hey Tom welcom to the forum. Looks like you're looking for a little input on life in Japan? :?: Well I'm sure you've already heard all the positive stuff (hence you seem like you can't wait to get here) so I'll share a little of the negative with you. :?

Japanese for the most part are not very good at sharing their true feelings so if I were you I'd make damn sure that your japanese "friends" are truly willing to have a lowly gaijin in their home. 8O They may say "Hai Hai, daijobu daijobu" but you have to see how they're acting when they say it. ie. Are they breathing heavy and slowly moving their head from side to side when they say "daijobu"? Were the words "muzkashi or taihen" used anywhere in the reply? If so then you can bet that even though they said they did they really don't want you in their home :( Japanese are not the best in the world at saying NO

I'm not going to move to Japan for good, probably 1-2 years.... I've been there before, but only for 2 weeks....

God man I hope you know what you're doing. Hope you're ready to put up with some unbelievable racism..... 8O I know I know "We got racism in the States too" and there's something else that we also have in the States that they DON'T have in japan and that is laws against racism.

Hope you're ready to live in an uninsulated shoe box where in the winter you have to haul home jugs of fule oil to fire up your little smelly space heater that never really gets the house warm cuz there's no insulation.

Hope you're ready to fly home anytime you need dental care cuz unless you have some sort of a death wish or are just plain insane you won't want to use "dark ages" type system they have going over here. 8O

Hope you don't mind being asked how big your dick is whenever you go out drinking. 8O

Hope you're ready to be constantly told how worthless, stupid, dirty, and dangerous the US and Americans are and how wonderful, well educated, technologically advanced, and safe japan and the japanese are. 8O

Hope you're ready to put up with hypocrisy beyond your wildest dreams.

I've also been studying Japanese for about 5 months now.... any help would be greatly appreciated, cuz I'll be a gaijin soon.... thanks!

-- Tom

Don't worry. No matter how well or how poorly you speak japanese you will never be totally accepted or fit in.

You see, if you speak THEIR language too well you're called a "henagaijin" (a strange non-japanese) and they'll tell you that it's better when a gaijin speaks broken japanese. (A few of their TV personalities have said this on TV more than a few times) You see if you speak THEIR oh soooo "unique" language too well you become a threat to their "special uniqueness" and they don't like that. :x

But then on the other hand if you don't speak THEIR language very well or at all. Then you're just lazy and are not interested in the "wonderful, beautiful, and ultra-unique" japanese culture and therefore you should just get out of wonderland :?

Anyway hope I helped. And best of luck to ya..... BTW. You said that you'll "be a gaijin soon" just wanted to let you know that you already are a "gaijin"..... No matter where you are in the world, if you are not japanese (By japanese I mean you must be able to prove that the last 20 dozen generations of all sides of your family were born and raised in and NEVER left japan) you are a GAIJIN.... :?

The word "gaijin" DOES NOT mean "foreigner" (as many gaijin like to think) it means "Anyone who is not 100% pure japanese" .... You see if you were to someday marry a J-girl and you had kids they would not be referred to as japanese or gaijin, what they will forever be called (as long as their in japan) is "hafu" 8O

re: hi

Postby tomorris » Sat Jan 03, 2004 11:22 pm

Hi,
Yea, I know all about the racism and drawbacks to being there, I have been reading these forums for about 6 months now.... I have no illusions of trying to become Japanese or any crap like that, I just want to learn Japanese and live overseas for a year, max. 2... after that I will be moving to NYC and going to law school...
I know that my Japanese friend, whom I met in NYC, will at least help me find some housing. We spoke in English, so I don't know about any particular Japanese words that he would have used. Also, my Japanese friend suggested it without me asking, so that is a positive point. Even if he backs out, he or another friend that I have could help me find housing. And yes, I know that I am a gaijin to a Japanese person wherever I go; however, the only place that it really matters to me is Japan, because that's the only place where I'll ever be surrounded by Japanese people and where I'll be at such a huge disadvantage... thanks again for your help.

Hey friend sorry I sounded so negative, guess this place has just really burned a hole in my butt over the years.

Anyway you sound like your head is in the right place for spending a a year or two in "the land of the only real humans on earth". If you're plan is to come for a year or two to learn the language and see a different part of the world and then return home to get on with your life then I'm sure you'll have a great time here. Just beware, if you marry one of these girls and have "hafu" kids you'll be putting them (the kids) through hell if you stay and raise them here.

I know that my Japanese friend, whom I met in NYC, will at least help me find some housing. We spoke in English, so I don't know about any particular Japanese words that he would have used. Also, my Japanese friend suggested it without me asking, so that is a positive point.

That's good. I'm sure your Japanese friend can help you find a place but just be prepared to have 9 out of 10 doors slammed in your face (even if you have a Japanese wife along with you) simply because you're a gaijin (not human) and they will tell you that's why and there ain't much you can do about it. :x

[quote]Even if he backs out, he or another friend that I have could help me find housing. And yes, I know that I am a gaijin to a Japanese person wherever I go]

Again, sorry I'm so negative, guess I need to get away for a while
just thought this might be some stuff you never thought of and might need to know before you jumped in.

Anyway I misread your first post. I thought you said that you were going to be moving here for good (that's why I wanted to let you know about the negative) but I just reread your post and what you said was that you were "NOT going to move here for good only for a year or two"....

Man if you're only going to be here for a year or two, I'm sure you'll have a blast :D Just be careful to not let yourself get trapped
You know it's the end of the world when the lights go out.

Hi again,
Thanks for all of the advice....yea, I will only be staying for 1 - 2 years. I am going to move to NYC after that, I lived there for a semester this year and really liked it. Hopefully I'll be in Japan long enough to get decent at Japanese and travel around Asia a bit... If you have any other advice that would be great too, esp. regarding interviewing for an eikaiwa job, or day-to-day stuff... thanks much.

Well, not exactly new by registration, but lurked a bit and that's it.

Robin, 27, British.

Back in London for 18 months after just about 3 years in Yokohama - 2 years teaching 1 year headhunting. Now just trying to work out any possible way to get back to Japan with a proper long term career prospect, rather than what I've done before. Could prove hard work, especially for one who's been so damn lazy at learning the language as me.

Ambition - start my own business in Japan and try and provoke a bit more of an entrepreneurial culture there! :)

just some geek...

Postby eecue » Fri Jan 09, 2004 3:48 pm

i'm a geek from Los Angeles. I have been to jp once a year ago for two weeks at which point i took a couple thousand pictures:

http://jp.eecue.com/

the only photos of any real interest are the Earth Simulator photos from my tour. ES is the world's fastest super computer btw.

so yeah geek.

anyway... here is my personal site:

http://eecue.com/

and here is a site i do about music:

http://junglescene.com

i'm coming to Tokyo and probably Osaka in mid-February for a couple of weeks for vacation and to spend time with Ryoko-chan. i plan on moving to japan in a year if all goes as planned. i currently write code for a company in LA but i work from home and set my own hours, my boss wouldn't mind if lived in japan after the project is done. that will keep me fed until i can speak japanese well enough to get a programming gig in tokyo.

so yeah that's probably too much info but oh well.
