Zoom, zoom, zoom... 120 km/h!

With some of the lowest speed limits in the world...
Japan's Expressways set to adopt 120 km/h (74.6 mph) speed limit

...blah, blah, blah, ...
...
高速道の利用者約2100人に行ったアンケートで、半数超が規制速度の引き上げに賛成していることも分かった。

55 mph = 88.5 km/h

It isn't the expressway speed limits which drive me wild, it is the 40 km/h and 60 Km/h local roads.

120 chachacha! 120 chachacha!

Happy news...but the cluster fuck of all the traffic lights/intersections on local roads and criminal responsibility for not being able to warp time/space and prevent darwin award winners are higher on my checklist.

I think the speed limiters are set to 120, no? (at least they used to be on some cars)

Mine was 245kph before I had uprev tinker with my box.

While it's good news that they are going up to 120 it won't make much of a difference in Kanto because most of the time they have those LED speed signs permanently set to 80.

Yup, most JDM cars not expected for track use have a speedo and limiter up to 180. Don't apply to import.
Always wanted to cry seing the Note with a speedo up to 180 when in fact trying to go from 80 to 100 was an ear splitting exercize in patience and frustration...

Kraut have/had the 250 kph gentlemen agreement speed limit (except the AMG (Benz)/ S-RS (Audi) / R (VW) and M (BMW) lineups). Meanwhile French cars can go as fast as the tow truck they are resting on...

Sounds like fun for all....

Sorta on-topic but I really wish they would stop using those temporary post up signs that look just like regular speed limit signs. (In California, they are usually orange/black to get your attention and let you know things aren't business as usual) Here, same color, same everything, which makes for great hi-jinks when you realize halfway through the 80km/h stretch you've driven a million times before...that there is some sort of construction or maintenance and they only want you doing 50km/h.

Local speed limits back in Canada are about the same, so I guess it has never bothered me.

Highways in Canada which are not expressway standard (access restricted to motor vehicles; hard centre barrier; no intersections, only merge in and merge out; fenced, no farm access gates off that road) are about 60 Km/h?

I think that the speed limits here haven't bothered you because, like everyone else, you are regularly exceeding them by 20 Km/h. While some 40 Km/h roads deserve that limit, many are suitable for 60 Km/h, and a heck of a lot of the 60 Km/h roads are beautifully constructed and perfectly suitable for 80 Km/h, as shown by the speeds actually used on them. Then you come across some slowpoke actually keeping to the speed limit, and boy is it frustrating.

They are not uncommon, ferschur. As they should be, because the only true thing about the speed limit debate is that speed kills. But nobody could fault you for wanting to poke out your own eye on one of those beautifully slush funded smooth as a baby's bottom rural roads with a 40 K limit.

In Canader the rule is that you get about 12-15 kmh leeway in rural areas with not much access, though many locals consider 80 the bare minimum acceptable and get quite heated if challenged on that.

Sorry, I assumed when you said local roads, you meant roads within urban areas. Highways in rural areas are 80 kph in Ontario, Expressways are 100.
